This mommy misses her boy

Don’t worry.  Everyone is OK.  When I usually go by my kids’ rooms after they are gone to school, what goes through my head is: “what a mess”. This morning I passed by my son’s room –it was clean, and I had a nut in my stomach. My son went to Biloxi with a youth religious group to help with rebuilding there. He will only be gone for 5 days, but the thought of not seeing him today after school produced the separation anxiety. I know he is a big boy, and he has been away before, and yet…

When he first approached me with the idea of going to Biloxi, quite honestly, I was reluctant. I thought he couldn’t afford to miss a day of school. Let's just say, he needs a lot more effort to be a straight A student. My wise husband convinced me that I was wrong (not about the grades, but about going).

They left today at 5am. I am proud of my kid, the fact that he wants to go far away for a chance to help someone re-build their home. What he learns on this trip could have a bigger impact on his life then a day of missed school. I’ll report on his trip (if he allows me) when he comes back. Now this mommy would just have to wait for a phone call.

- This is a wonderful and honest post.  I am going to feature it in Family Ties.  As for your son, that is indeed a noble cause, and I'm sure things will go well.  What a great experience for him (but I would feel the same way that you do).

Jason - thanks so much. I am surprised with myself. He is too big for the mommy separation anxiety attack. It turns out - I am not. He was thrilled to go. Is the phone ringing, yet? I keep looking at my cell -what if I miss it?

Faina- Been there done that and we are never too old to miss out "little ones" no matter how big they really are.  The lessons he will learn on this short trip will stay with him so much longer than the facts and figures he will memorize in school......good choice to let him go....and yes, that phone will ring, but not as often as you'd like :)

Faina - I feel your pain.  I wonder if we ever really get over this?  I don't think it's truly possible to ever stop missing them - no matter how old they are.  Hang in there - the phone is going to ring any minute with his excited voice.  That will make it all worth it!

Faina, I get chills reading this...  separation anxiety for moms has no age limit.  I'm glad that you got your two calls.  I know everything will be fine and he will learn a lot and will love every minute of it!  Hang in there!!!

We boys are a tough lot.  Heavy on need, but light on communication.  I'm sure my own mother must have pulled her hair out when I was away at college.  I never called.  I hope you get that phone call, Faina, but he knows what he means to you and you to him.

Faina- Believe me, this experience is far better than any thing he will learn in School!  You must be so proud! Take it from a homeschooling mom, the real life education outweighs the inside the schoolroom education by a long shot! Katerina

Irena - you got that right. Just when I thought I outgrew it, there it was. He loves it, says that everyone is so nice there. He is used to the NY way - may not be as nice. Thanks - we will be speaking Russian in short order.

Paul - I am a mom to multiple male species and , of course, a wife -to one. Phone calls to moms don't rate high on their agendas, generally. But I got my share of calls yesterday - I am not complainig. It even included the L-word. Paul, I am sure your non-calling days are just a memory now.
