Lessons Learned from a Swedish Apartment

Swedish Kitchen

My recent stay in a Stockholm apartment proved to be a good source of some off the job training.  Most would assume that staying in an 800 square foot apartment would be tough on a family of 4.  Not so in Sweden and many other European countries.  For example, take a look at this photo.  The dishwaher is 1/2 the size of mine at home and the refrigerator (that you cannot see is also very compact.)  The place is tidy, space is optimized with the addition of several requesite IKEA staging solutions, and the heated tile floor  on the tiny balcony is the perfect solution for getting a breath of fresh air in the cold winter months.

Now...it's time to bring this back to staging in North America...and more specifically for me staging in the Midwest.  Well, here it is.  As home stagers we are often concerned about the perception of prospective buyers when it comes to their likelihood of making an offer with a uniquely small kitchen, master bath, etc.  I think it is time to take the focus to what can we do to show how amazingly resoruceful we can be in using these cozy spaces.  In some cases it might even be time to put a little IKEA on!

Design To Market has been staging homes in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky since 2004. For more information about this project and our other Cincinnati home staging services please call us at 513-265-0952 or visit our website at www.designtomarketllc.com.

In general I think that we North Americans tend to use a lot more space than we need Jo. We can really learn some lessons fron Europeans about economizing.

What were you doing in Sweden Jo?? Isn't it amazing how "little" we can make due with?  I remember when we stayed in corporate apts. when we first moved to TX - we actually had a lot time to do more than keep house, I didn't miss my stuff until it all came pouring out of the moving truck!  I love going to IKEA and seeing how little space they can make into a great place. Merry Christmas!

Jo, what a coincidence.  I visited a house today that needs to basically be gutted and through the entire tour I was thinking IKEA.  Wish one was closer, thanks for sharing!

Jo - How fun to be in Sweden - love the view from the balcony!  They're building lots of tiny condos here in Vancouver that are around 450 sq feet - one really needs to understand how to maximize storage!

Thanks for all of the comments. The small spaces are incredibly well planned. I would have to, however, get over my pack rat tendencies!

Jo.....Same goes...as you mentioned....for many cities in Europe.  When staying in Paris I've done VERY well in a much smaller space!  It is all about the layout and planning!  And....us Americans who do like our space!!

Hi Jo--bet you had an amazing time in Stockholm.  Gorgeous city.  It is a very valuable lesson of how the Europeans make such little space so functional.  It's definitely a lesson we could start learning.

STOCKHOLM - - - - - - I LOVE STOCKHOLM ! ! ! ! !

I lived in Stockholm in the mid-1980s. What a FANTASTIC CITY --- Venice of the North ! ! !  Here is a photo taken of my view from a block away from my apartment at Djurgårdsbrunn over Strandvägen kajen. My apartment was in one of the grand old dames located to the right of the photo. Stunning location overall !
