Holiday Balance...Or The Art Of Juggling!!!

By
Title Insurance with Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.

How can anyone write about 'holiday balance' without reference to 'family'!
Family is at the core of everything we do!

The word 'holiday' is a derivation of 'Holy Day', and for purposes of this post, holiday is defined by Webster as a 'period of relaxation'! So how do we balance relaxation, family, and work?

One of the fantasies of my life was to learn how to juggle...I've never mastered the art...yes I have tried desperately to acquire this talent, but to no avail...I just simply cannot juggle!!!

Over the years I have learned that if I plan things too carefully that more often than not I will be disappointed...something always seems to come up to spoil the best of plans...So I have learned to plan cautiously, leaving much 'wiggle room' for spontaneity!

As someone trained in procedures, regimens, methods, rules, regulations, compliance, and detail, 'spontaneity' can cause much trepidation...however I've found that if I truly embrace and invite 'spontaneity', it can be the source of a great amount of pleasure, adventure, and excitement!

Now with 5 kids between the ages of 4 and 13, believe me there can be some real adventure and excitement, particularly around the holidays! The trick is to create an environment that allows for family fun, adventure and spontaneity in a spirit of safety and respect.

I endeavor to create this 'safe harbor' by emphasizing relationships over monetary considerations...people are more important than things...and encouraging each family member to engage in dialog or activities which foster interaction between themselves and the world around them...to BE themselves and let others SEE them as they are...and in that process to remain open to spontaneity, adventure, and 'holiday excitement'! This usually results in a holiday filled with 'neat', memorable, and festive activities which produce fulfilling holidays...and truly make them 'Holy Days'!!!

I recall the words of a beautiful hymn written by Gary Ault over 30 years ago:

All that we have and all that we offer,

Come from a heart both frightened and free.

Take what we bring now, and give what we need,

       All done in His Name!

This particular holiday season will be one of learning how to sacrifice...to see our siblings and other family member's needs as more important than our own...to learn that it is truly more enjoyable to give than to receive...to take the 'smaller' piece of pie with gratitude and leave the 'larger' piece for another...to accept the challenge that 'people' ARE more important than 'things'!

Perhaps I am learning how to juggle after all!!!

Fran-You said People are more Important than things........if you had written nothing else, this would have said it all.

The lessons you are teaching the kids this year, of taking a smaller piece of the pie" is one I taught my kids from Day 1....... we have given to others, without their even knowing it, just because it felt right.  My Daughter has done that a few times this year,  (throughout the year) given to people in need, with no expectations. It is a great feeling as a parent to watch this, and it was all because of those early lessons...........

Never Give to Get, and Never Give with any Expectaions.......

Kathy: Excellent advice...and it means more to them when they have to put out a little effort also!

Joddie: When people marvel at the size of my family I usually respond, "It's hard being a practicing Catholic". My kids are my greatest assets...and my wife also!

Fran, thanks again for your support of the Holiday Balance contest.  As you know, you led the pack of Active Rain men by being a shining example for contest support.  I enjoyed this particular post especially because I have known how to juggle (literally) since about age 14 and it has always been a fun distraction for me and entertainment for others.  The thing to remember is that when you juggle balls, or pins, or apples, everything falls into place.  Juggling may look like chaos, but is actually very organized.  I love to see the smile on other people's faces when I entertain them with my juggling.  Thanks for using this metaphor and for being an inspiration to others here.

Brian,

I've known a few 'jugglers' in my time and without exception they were all nice people...always wanting to please others...

I figured as you said that there was a 'trick' to it...I like the way you put it...'everything falls into place'!!!

Thanks,   Fran

P.S. The contest was a pleasure and all the entries were great!!!

I can not Juggle (literally) but have learned to juggle life events and how to drop everything for a need somewhere else. Things don't get finished and life can be quite chaotic but it is the best- because we try to meet the most important need at the time. Christ gave the example of the shepherd who leaves 99 sheep to go find the one sheep that was lost....he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, carries it home and celebrates with his friends and neighbors.

This is such a great post since we are so wrapped up in work commitments today that we tend to neglect family commitments. I remember a time when when we worked less, played more and spent Sunday afternoons with family. Those were the good ole days. But it comes down to choices and I am afraid we are all a bit sucked in by the world.

I believe that God is calling HIS people to a higher purpose and truly showing us that time is short. Where do our treasures lie?
