Moving can be an exciting time for you and your children.  It can also be a stressful time for your children especially if they are of school-age.  The thought of going to a new school and making new friends can be overwhelming for many young children.  How well your children handle stress and change depends on their personality and developmental age.  Therefore, it’s important to be patient and supportive of their feelings.  There are things you can do to ease your children’s fears and apprehensions as well as helping them adjust to the move.

Once you know you want to move, involve your children early in the house-hunting process.  This will help them adjust and accept the idea of moving.  Be enthusiastic and positive about the upcoming change.  If you are excited and confident, your child will be too.  Once you’ve selected your new house, show your children where their new rooms will be.  Get them excited about how they plan to decorate their rooms.

Before you move, plan a farewell party for your children to help solidify the reality of moving.  Involve them in the party planning.  Give them address books to collect phone numbers and addresses of friends and family.  Notecards are a great way to show children how to keep in touch with friends and family.
