Why join the White County Historical Society?  Many reasons but the main one could be to get their newsletter that is sent monthly....with pictures!  They have given me permission to use their pictures on this blog so I am going to share this one with you. It was in the current issue and I have never seen it before.  Look at all these handsome guys of the White County Mounted Patrol.

Now that you see overall, I'm going to show you up close ones.

It's a great picture and I have one big, big question.  Who is the girl on far right shifted off into the background?  What was her role?

Love the picture, Ms. Barbara!  When I first looked at it, I couldn't help but think of the Texas Rangers.  Then I looked and it was our very own WHITE COUNTY!  Hurray!

I am wondering about the young lady too...she caught my eye in the overall picture. She looks like she is in uniform with the guys.  I wonder if she was a rider or maybe even a trainer.  Her eyes look adventurous...well...to me anyway.   I will be watching the blog to learn more on this one.

I hope there is lots more information coming!

Sorry...I had to take another look...Is that a gun strapped to her hip?  Sure looks like it to me...I guess they didn't lay aside their weapons even for a picture...I wonder if they were headed out on some adventure with a purpose?  Okay,  I'll be watching and ready to learn more.

Yep, that looks like a peace maker strapped to the lass's middle.

Here's a blow up of one on the gent.

Debbie and Don, I think they all have on guns, don't they?  Look at Ivan Q, the second on the front row.  He is sitting in a position so all can see his gun!  The others don't seem to show up very much.  But if they were in uniform and a gun is part of the uniform, they all have one.  After all, they were on patrol duty, weren't they?  But what is the poor girl doing all by herself?  There has to be an explanation somewhere.  Why didn't they just put her behind a curtain if she didn't belong?

I think that girl has a gun too!  I think there must be a bigger story for them to be in full uniform, including their guns.  Were there any others on the other side of the curtain...

My powers of observation are non-existent.  I have seen this picture several times and NEVER noticed the girl sitting to the side!  Do not call me to the witness stand.

I think the picture is made in the high school gym, so it's not a curtain, Debbie.....it is a post.

Why the girl is there, or who she is will probably forever remain  a mystery, but I'm sure before the day is over Don will blow up (not literally, but photographically) the gun and will tell us the make and model and some of its history.  We're waiting, Don!

One of the Patrol men is Dr. Martin Hawkins.  He delivered me and even made a house call a few days after I went home (according to my mother)......I also worked for him as a surgical nurse when I returned to Searcy after graduation.  You have blogged some pictures of some of us nurses outside the hospital: Hawkins Clinic Hospital, Grand Ave. and Market St.  Phone 700.

Anita, Debbie and Mary, the newsletter further says the Mounted Patrol was organized in the early 1960's, worked directly under the sheriff and helped with parking and traffic control during the White County Fair and the aftermath of windstorms, tornadoes, flooding and any other emergencies.

Missing from the picture, says the newsletter, were Joe Taylor, Jr. (Anita's one time heartthrob?), Tom Henderson and Billy Bell.

Mary, evidently picture was taken in the early 60's.

WHO'S THE GIRL?

Maybe learning who the girl is would give me the excuse to call Jody.  Yes, he was my heartthrob, he lived across the street from me.  He still lives in Searcy, and his wife and I are good buddies.  He also fathered 5 girls, all their names start with J.

He was probably out fighing a fire when the picture was made.  He was also a volunteer fireman, along with my dad.  As Dorothy has written several times, if the fire whistle blew when Jody was in class on the 2nd floor of the high school, he had permission to jump out the window and run to the fire station, which was just one block away.

Anita, I thought he fathered 4 girls.  Where'd the 5th come from?  One thing I remember about Jody was seeing a dog in the back of his pickup truck.  Where he went the dog went.  Wonder if that is still true?  Why don't you call him and find out who the girl was?

I stand corrected:  Jody only had 4 girls.  I've just talked with him, he doesn't know who the girl/woman is.  His wife, Jackie, told me some funny stories about some of the 'patrols".

Anita, your task is still assigned.  Who is the girl and why was she there?  Also tell us some of the funny stories about the Patrol.  Does it still exist?

I have this original picture and I feel so dumb; I've never noticed the woman before you asked about her.  Leon and I are on a mission to find out who she is.  I also have a pictue of them on their horses.

I'm afraid the stories wouldn't pass the censor.

Sherry.....of course you and Leon are the ones to find out who the girl is!  Surely someone will know, keeping trying.
