"Christmas Lights Beware"

By
Home Inspector with BeSure Home Inspection Service

I complete a home inspection Friday for a FSBO. Well they had the home all decked out with Christmas lights which I was really surprised to see. But to each to their own on how they want to sell their home. The home was a very nice home with only a few minor correctable problems except one major problem! The outside Christmas display. And before I get hit here telling me I can not inspect electrical in Ohio. I only complete a safety survey of the electrical systems. So back to the outdoor light display. This gentlemen has a beautiful display, but he has what I would call under size indoor style electrical cord strung every where with Glad plastic sandwich bags over the plug connectors. I counted 10 displays in the yard, a full house outline, and 3 tree's. All of these were plugged into two outdoor plugs on the home that were not GFI protected. It looked very nice lite up.  So this tip is this, when you are putting out your lights or you have a client that have lights out. Make sure that they have the right size outdoor cords, and purchase a weather proof cover for the connectors. Follow the manufactures recommendations on how many lights you can connect together, And last, make sure that you have a GFI breaker or plug to power the display. So if you are going to out do the Jones, at least do it safe
