  • Click My Profile on the upper left corner of the page to view your completed profile. If you need to make changes, click Edit next to My Profile to return to your profile editing page.

Your ActiveRain account is ready for the world. Take a few minutes to look around. Start by clicking on your city or county (top of your profile) to see who else from your area is on ActiveRain. Click Blogs in the upper right to see what other ActiveRain members are talking about.

ActiveRain is great for peer-to-peer communication, but you won't find many prospects on ActiveRain. Why bother? ActiveRain is designed for SEO, search engine optimization. When you start posting and commenting at ActiveRain, your posts and your AR home page will start climbing toward the top of Google searches. For now, join ActiveRain and start looking around. You'll find plenty of value.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Gary.  I taught a Web 2.0 Marketing class last Friday and my students wanted step-by-step instructions.  Sometimes we take technology for granted, but for many in the industry, the toughest step is the first step.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

But how do you get them to interact with each other or write a blog? Lots of agents come here to set up a profile and then split.

Great question Elizabeth. I know that Frank will have a good answer but it has been my experience that it has to be your experience! What I mean is once you see you SEO head north because of AR, you become inspired. We just have to encourage real participation for a short time.

Elizabeth,  some brokers use a carrot (free Starbucks card) while others use a stick ("Third prize is 'You're fired!'"), but it is hard to set a specific goal for blogging because AR points should not be the objective.

Start with information: Industry: What NAR and C.A.R. Technology Surveys Tell Us

C.A.R.'s technology survey found that 44% of business originated from the internet.  Ask who is ready to give half their business to someone else by ignoring the internet.  Do they need to spend a lot of money?  Nope.  C.A.R.'s survey also found no correlation between the amount paid for a website and the amount of business generated.  My guess, since you are in Sacramento, is that the market is pretty lean.  Pitch the internet as a less expensive publishing model for drip marketing.  Pitch blogging as a way of engaging SOI without having to call them all the time.

Here are several blog posts from my local blog for agents who are interested in starting a blog aimed at their SOI, clients, and prospects.  Basically these cover the why, how, what, and where of local blogging.

Strategy: Objectives Of Real Estate Blogging

Strategy: Getting Organized To Make Blogging Easie...

Strategy: Choosing Effective Blogging Topics

Strategy: Getting Your FREE Blog Started

My personal recommendation is 50/50.  50% real estate to establish credibility and 50% local content because your SOI, clients, and prospects have interests outside of real estate.  To be candid, real estate blogging was the rage a couple of years ago and interest has dipped.  Why?  Because blogs that focused 100% on real estate or "REALTOR blogger stream of what happened at my open house yesterday" were not particularly effective at attracting and retaining the right readership.

Thanks!

Elizabeth, in response to your question, I dug a little deeper and came up with a post defending my 50/50 recipe for real estate blogging success.

Whatever happened to Real Estate Blogging?

Thanks for the inspiration!
