Do you ever think over conversations you’ve had with people you really enjoyed? Over the weekend I was immersed in a plethora of topics…there was never a moment for companionable silence because we had too much to talk about. Somehow I emerged from the weekend exhausted and refreshed at the same time. Who knew a mini vacation could be had from my back seat office with the added bonus of getting a great mountain home under contract?
One of the questions I was asked was what kind of music do I like. The immediate response was just about anything except for a heavy concentration in country music (no offense to those who live and breathe slide guitar). Now that we have their new home negotiated and under contract, I’ve been thinking about the question. As I reflect over the music I’ve loved, the common thread has always been extraordinary guitar skill. Oddly enough, I went to sleep last night with the same tune that I woke up with. You know what that means, right? Yep…YouTube.
When I was about 12 years old my family watched television together. There was so much richness coming from the tube. Laugh In, Smothers Brothers, Glen Campbell, Carol Burnette and so forth. I remember at 12 years of age being blown away by a guest musician on the Smothers Brothers and using my allowance money to buy the 45 r.p.m. to play on my record player. My parents had given me a white record player with a red and white striped lid for Christmas along with the albums, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Chad & Jeremy. I would listen to this new 45 and the albums constantly.
Who vied for my musical attention? Mason Williams playing Classical Gas. I hope I’ll have company across the country with this tune also occupying a little bit of your brain.
Have a really wonderful week.
