Gaithersburg Police Launch Pedestrian Safety Initiative

The Gaithersburg Police Department is conducting an initiative to increase awareness of pedestrian safety through education efforts and enforcement efforts. The campaign is made possible through a grant received by the police department from the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The Gaithersburg Police Department will begin education and enforcement actions along Route 355 and Great Seneca Highway at Kentlands Boulevard in Gaithersburg, focusing on pedestrians not properly using crosswalks and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. The initiative will run from March 19th through April 14th. Drivers and pedestrians observed in violation may receive a citation or a preprinted warning.

Pedestrian safety remains a concern of the police, where citizens often cross against the pedestrian signal, putting themselves at risk of being struck by a vehicle.

Please be careful when you are walking or driving in our community.

Spring flowers are blooming in Gaithersburg. Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the changing colors of the season.

Maybe we should have this in NYC.  People here get hit by cabs and delivery guys on bicycles all the time!

Roy, it really sounds like your Gaithersburg government has it "together" at all levels.  Really taking pro-active steps in so many areas.  Here's hoping at least one more person remains safe.

Thanks for your comments.  Many other communities should implement the same types of initiatives.

Roy- Good for the Gaithersburg police.  This is especially important with everyone's heads looking down at their gadgets!

Roy,

This is an excellent idea for the police to essentially teach pedestrains the rules of safety. This may save someone's life.

I guess they want excuses to harass pedestrians now....With the increased crime in Montgomery Villiage , this seems to be a waste of time and taxpayer dollars.  Why don't they spend more time actually putting crosswalks o 355 in place instead of ticketing jaywalkers.  Absolute nonsense

Thanks for your comments.  Have an outstanding weekend.

Tony:  Montgomery Village is not in the City of Gaithersburg. It is part of Montgomery County.

That is a technicality that is irrelevant to the point.  I'm sure there are parts of Gaithersburg that could use more patrols.  But instead the taxpayers are footing the bill for grants which will have no effect.  The point is the way to make the streets safer for pedestrians (and motorists alike) is with crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signs , not citations.  They could endlessly ticket people on 355 because there is no safe way of crossing that street.
