Don't Be Sucked In By The HSUS - Support Your Local Animal Shelter

I re-blogged a post by Realtor Larry Brewer regarding National Humane Societies on Active Rain a few weeks ago.

This is the link so you can review Larry's article.

http://activerain.com/blogsview/1532000/donate-to-your-local-animal-shelter-not-the-national-humane-society

I thought it was worth posting the message again and adding some additional information. It might benefit reader to know that The Human Society of The United States does not care for one single animal.

Human Society of the United States

The Human Society of the United States spends millions of your donated dollars on administrative costs, salaries, lobbying and advertising.

You see pleading ads on TV with celebrities asking for just $19.00 a month to sign up and save a particular pet. Those ads costs millions. Your donations pay for them.

So how many contributors at $19.00 a month does it take to pay for those ads? How many animals did not get the benefit of your donation?

Your donations go to overhead costs not the animals.

Despite the heart wrenching commercials with Willie Nelson singing or the lyrics of Silent Night stinging your eyes with tears, this organization does not house one single animal.

  • In fact only 1% of donations ever filter down to the shelter level.  That means 1.9 cents of your $19.00 donation actually reaches an animal. Humane Watch

Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States launched a huge donation campaign for the dogs confiscated from Michael Vick.

  • Unbeknownst to the general public they were simultaneously lobbying to kill those same dogs. One hand was out collecting money while the other was poised to push the hypodermic plunger. Colorado Pet Association  KC Dog Blog

There are many no-kill organizations who are struggling to make a difference in our community. Bloom where you are planted.  Your local Animal Control can give you some names and contact numbers.

  • Locally your $19.00 will feed many more than just a single pet for a month. Bloom where you are planted. Support your local rescue and humane efforts in Lackawanna County Pa.

Many organizations bring animals to Petsmart in Dickson City Pa every weekend. Your veterinarian is also another source to find a no-kill truly dedicated organization who are worthy of your contributions.

Please seek them out and support them.

Bonnie - PETA is another one that sucks money away from the shelters that would use it for the beneit of the animals. About the only thing you can say in favor of these organizations is that they make people aware of animal abuse.

Support your local no-kill shelters!

I have heard this before, but never researched it. However I am a bit confused because Spokane Washington's Humane Society DOES house dogs and cats and preforms thousands of spay/neuters per year. I would love to see more people donate to the samll rescue's like the one in our city, Priest River, Idaho, who run with volunteers and only 2 paid kennel cleaners. I don't want people to think poorly of the  Spokane Humane Society because they definitely do care about dogs and cats and helping get the pet population in control.  The National Humane Society should put money into spay / neuter like us small rescues do.....

I routinely give to our local NO-kill sanctuary in the names of my and my husband's mothers - the 2 Pats - for Mother's Day.

Debbie:  Especially around Christmas time see how often they are run.  I wonder how many people ever follow up to see how their animal is doing?  You know you get a picture and a story to go along with your monthly donation. Where are those pets?

Cathyr I could spend hours telling you what I know about these organizations and how vile they can be.  I operated a Boarding Kennel in Sanford Fl.  I was a Board member of the Central Florida Kennel Club and a Board member of a private non-profit rescue.  The local Humane Society of Seminole County did battle with me every chance they got. I was also an appointee of the County Supervisors in an Animal Control advisory position.

The local Humane Society sent their euthanized animals over to Animal control for disposal.  I would get calls on a regular basis to come and see the animals they destroyed.  Entire litters of 6-8 week old pure-bred German Sheperd puppies or Dobermans or mixes of either one.  Rottweilers never stood a chance.  Pit Bulls came in one door and right out the back door into a truck.  They never got a meal or a drink of water.  Just plain killed as soon as the owner or the person who found them left.

I tried to start a low cost spay neuter program and I took too much of their thunder away.  They got the veterinary association to threaten the vet who had agreed to do the surgeries.  My program lasted about 3 weeks before they torpedoed it.

I do not doubt there are dedicated people who spend their lives working to help animals.  There are those who do it just to get their names in the paper and attend social events.

The Humane Society of the United States was the parent group under which these organizations were formed.  I discovered that at our local shelter black dogs were being put down almost as soon as they came in.  Why?  The HSUS produced a report on the color preferences of dogs adopted.  Black was at the bottom of the list.  Therefore these morons decided black dogs were not adoptable.

Wallace: I will support no kill shelters or small groups who do rescue.  I am a volunteer for the Bouvier rescue. Jayne is a volunteer for the Collie rescue.  If needed we will go wherever in a 300 mile radius to identiy and transport one out of a shelter.

Again to Cathy... I think HSUS is completely different from the Spokane group. The title "Humane Society" is used by many fine organizations who aren't associated with HSUS.

Do you remember when we tried to get help from HSUS to shut down that Diamond Lake puppy mill - they couldn't have cared less.

And to everyone else - Cathy happens to be a dedicated Priest River Animal Rescue volunteer - one who gives freely of both her time and money to help the lost, abused, and abandoned animals in our community.

Marte:  We have a group here also that calls themselves a Humane Society.  They do go above and beyond trying to rehabilitate pets and find them new homes.  I do not believe they are chartered under the HSUS.  The shelters who are chartered by HSUS are the ones who have some weird ideas spawned by the parent group.

Jayne and I both have been rescuing pets for 40 or more years.  Between us we have 9 cats and 3 dogs all rescues.

Curtis _I just went over to Debra's post.  So glad it had a happy ending.  I've had both deaf and blind dogs and cats.  They are just as easy to love as any other.  I am forever stunned by the cruelty unleashed on helpless animals.

Don thank you for your commitment to animals by spreading the word.  I really wonder what happens to those dear animals whose photos get sent out to folks who think they are sponsoring them every month.  I hate to think about it.

Hi Bonnie - I saw Don's re-blog, and wanted to say thanks for confirming what I suspected. I am a supporter of our local humane society - I can see and touch what they do - and never could see the point in sending that support outside of our community.

Bonnie, I had no idea about HSUS, although I've long suspected that of any large organization that does a lot of TV advertising...and it's for that reason that I don't donate to such organizations, but rather give directly to the smaller groups.

Debra:  It is sad that so many people are being snookered into saving an animal which probably is long gone.  Reminds me of the teleministers bilking people out of their money and living high on the hog.
