This sale was a real estate agents dream. He sent his parents to look at only three homes. They picked Graceland. He liked it and closed 7 days later. I wish all my transactions went that smooth.
Elvis was having a fabulous year in 1956. In January he was only a regional sensation and by the end of the year was known internationally. In that same year Elvis and his parents had bought their first home a modest 3 bedroom 2 bath home in East Memphis. His popularity drew many people and the massive crowds scared the Presley’s and disrupted the neighborhood. In 1957 real estate agent Virginia Grant took his parents to see homes of a more rural nature. After showing them the first two she realized that they wanted something grander. Thinking quickly she drove them to Graceland. That evening there was a preliminary offer on the house. It was shown to Elvis two days later. He arrived early, walked through, sat and played the piano and when he was done said this place sure needs a lot of work, but I can make it nicer than Red Skelton’s home when I am done with it. The sale closed seven days later for $105,200 which included an exchange of their existing home $10,000 cash and a $37,500 mortgage.
I wonder if Red Skelton was this easy to work with?
