How to Plan a Cozy New Years Eve Party!

  • Put together a dynamic group of guests, ones that are different so that your party has many different personalities, creating many different topics to discuss and chat about through out the evening.
  • Make sure the dress code is one so that your guests feel comfortable at the party through out the evening.
  • Prepare a music mix that is sure to please your diverse crowd, making up an i-mix or cd's before hand with a large variety of appropriate music for your party.
  • Hire a charismatic bartender if you can, it will help soften the mood as people get to know each other.
  • Simple but classy foods are a must, fondue is great-both chocolate and cheese, wine, chocolate covered strawberries, shrimp, a nice baked crab dip, a stuffed baked Brie, stuffed mushrooms, beef wellington are some ideas, hiring a caterer will provide you with many more.
  • The more decorations the more festive the atmosphere will be.  Candles will help set a more intimate mood.
  • Have all of your guests write down their goals for 2008 on stationary you provide, along with a self addressed envelope, and then mail those to them in March or April to help them stay on course with their goals!  Or throw the goals into a hat, and have everyone guess who wrote what!
  • Don't forget your hat and noise makers for midnight to help bring in a great new year!

Have a great and safe New Years Eve, no matter where you are!

You sound like a wonderful hostess, Heather! I love to throw parties! I have this great game I sometimes play at showers, but it would work at a NY party, too. It's a great ice breaker! When the guests come in, you have them take a slip of paper and a pencil and write down two things on the front that most people wouldn't know about them. Then on the back, they write their name. One person is the host, (or hostess). That person cannot participate for a prize, but may throw in their "two things" just to add drama.

The rules are simple. Everyone gets a paper and pencil and the hostess reads the two things. The guests try to guess who the "two things" are true of. (Remember, people jump to conclusions based on appearances and not knowing much about the other guests). For instance, one "two things" paper may say, "I was a cheerleader in high school." and "I once kissed a stranger on a dare." While you may think it's the skinny outgoing blond to your right, it could actually be a quiet guy sitting in the corner. Everyone writes their guess as the "two things" are read.

IF ONE PLAYER KNOWS for sure who "two things" belong to, (such as a spouse or sister), then that player must act as though they do not know and must not take credit for that answer in the final tally. After all the things are read, the hostess goes back over and says, "The cheerleader who kissed a stranger was Fred..." Ohh's and Ahh''s abound and people laugh like crazy. At the end of the game, even strangers feel like they know eachother. Have a great party!
