A Plethora of Poison Ivy Patches

When I grew up, I was incredibly allergic to poison ivy.

  • If we drove by someone burning leaves or branches, just breathing in the smoke would give me a horrible reaction - inside my nose, on my skin, on every part of me that was open to air.
  • If I happened to touch someone else's clothing or skin and they had touched poison ivy, I broke out.
  • If I happened to touch it somehow myself, I would be covered, from head to toe with oozy scabs (lovely!).
  • Every year I'd come back from Girl Scout camp covered in bumps.
  • I have class pictures with my hair pulled back and a rash on my face.

poison ivyNeedless to say, I became very good at recognizing the plant, whether it was red or green, on vines or not.  I roll up my car windows, even to this day, if I see any kind of smoke, and I don't breathe until the car is past.  If I go in the woods, I wear long pants, and keep a careful eye out for anything remote poison ivy-ish. I even had to get weekly shots when I was younger, in the hopes my allergy to poison ivy would be reduced.  I've had to take corticosteroid medication to get rid of outbreaks.

Luckily, it's been quite a while since I've had an outbreak, and I'm not sure whether that's because I've outgrown the allergy, or because I've just been able to stay away from the plant successfully.

But this year I have reason to be concerned!

There appears to be a plethora of poison ivy patches profusely penetrating nearby parcels.  (I just had to get that alliterative urge out of my system!)

poison ivy lotsI'm not sure what is causing the huge growth.  I wonder whether the very dry winter and spring, and the warmer than usual temperatures might have something to do with it, but I have seen more poison ivy in the last few weeks than I remember seeing in any recent years.

The poison ivy is on the sides of all local roads.  It's popping up in the middle of lawns.  It's crawling up trees.

If you are selling a home, now would be a great time to take a tour of your property and eliminate any obvious patches of poison ivy.  There is a lot of information on the Internet on how to eliminate the plant safely.  Not eliminating it might keep a potential buyer (or real estate agent) from buying or showing your home if the growth is too widespread (such as in the above picture).

As for me, I'm doing the best I can to stay away from all traces of the pustule-producing plant, but I have to admit that just looking at it is making me itch

"leaves of three, let it be"

When my sister and Brother in law moved to VA they had vines the size of your arm growing on trees.. and he had to leave town when people were burning it... not fun !

There is a product that you can use pre poison ivy, or even if you think you touched it, it is supposed to stop any reaction before it starts. I forget the name of it, but I keep it in my first aid kit now when on scouting adventures.

Robert - I just did a web search to see what product might be able to be used pre-rash.  Is it Tecnu?  That sounds as though it's supposed to be used to get rid of the oil if you think you've touched it.  I might have to go get some!  (Just in case).

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Kat, I grew up camping and to this day I still wouldn't be able to identify it if I saw it. Yep..I heard the "leaves of three, let it be" but still never could identify it. Fortunately for me I've never gotten it. Very interesting about the new proliferation of growth all over in places that it seems it shouldn't be. Maybe it's invading..like Kudzu! For your sake, I hope not!! PS, thanks to your picture, I think I can now safely say I will know what it looks like should I come upon it!

Cindy - thanks for your comment!  Actually, the picture is only one example - it could be green, could be a huge plant, could be a vine.  It's a very sneaky little evil!

Kat:  Simply say it isn't so, sweetie!  LOVED your poisenous post and am really getting allergic to PI as I age.  Just had another birthday and it's a bummer.  Like alliteration too, ladyfriend.  So, the house we could not sell and rent had this issue, all over the DRIVEWAY area.  So, we got some roundup and took it out.  Anyone using the stuff should wear goggles and gloves and long sleeves / pants, it's nasty, but water soluable, so it will evaporate and not harm pets and kids after a couple of hours.  Great post!

Christine - Thank you!  I hope so too - I just went for a ride down to another county and saw it everywhere!  As long as I never get out of the car, I should be fine!  ha.

Hillary - Ugh, poison ivy all over the driveway would definitely need to be removed - good thing you did it without getting any of it yourself.  That's a tricky busienss1  Thanks for commenting.

Kat: We have it in Del Norte County CA, and it usually climbs up big pine trees rather than on the ground like you show it. And in the fall, those deep pink leaves up the tree trunks look fabulous. But, yes, don't touch. My dogs love to run through the forest and I make sure I'm covered up and have gloves on when I take them.
