Carolyn Smith, Realtor – Melbourne Beach, FL Real Estate: It’s Sea Turtle Season in Melbourne Beach, Florida!
Oceanfront real estate in Melbourne Beach, Florida is in high demand right now, as sea turtles begin scouting out the ideal spot to lay their eggs in Brevard County. May 1st marks the official start of sea turtle nesting season in Brevard County, Florida, and Melbourne Beach is prime nesting territory for loggerhead turtles, as well as green turtles and leatherback turtles.
Melbourne Beach, Florida, and specifically the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, is home to the largest sea turtle nesting area in the United States. Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1991 and runs 20.5 miles from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach along Florida’s east coast. The refuge was designed to serve as a protected habitat for nesting sea turtles, and hosts 15,000 to 20,000 nesting sea turtles every year. This makes Melbourne Beach and the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the Western Hemisphere, and the most significant spot for nesting green turtles in all of North America. Wow, that is pretty impressive, don’t you think? We are lucky to live in such an amazing spot to be able to experience this awesome natural wonder!
If you want to get up close and personal with a nesting sea turtle this year, you have a few different options for guided sea turtle walks. All of these sea turtle walks are led by educated volunteers who understand how to safely view the nesting sea turtles without disturbing them. Please don’t attempt to get close to a nesting sea turtle on your own.
Most of the sea turtle walks begin with an educational program about Florida’s sea turtles and sea turtle nesting, then continue with a walk on the beach to hopefully view a nesting turtle. You can expect to walk up to three miles on the beach, so be prepared with comfortable footwear, insect repellent, and a bottle of water. The programs can last up to 3 hours, and flashlights, filming, and photography are not allowed.
