There are a multitude of different phones and carriers to pick from in today’s mobile world. Cutting through the clutter isConsumer Reports Logo Consumers Reports annual best cell phone report, breaking it down by phone, smartphone, and carrier. Here’s a brief list of those that topped the charts in each category.

Top Phones in 2007:

v195.jpg 1. T-Mobile’s Motorola V195

2. At&T’s Samsung Sync SGH-A707

3. AT&T’s Sony Ericsson W810i

Top Smartphone in 2007:

iphone_home.gif 1. Apple iPhone (surprised?)

2. Palm Treo 755p

3. Samsung BlackJack

Top Carriers in 2007:

(based on call quality, dropped calls, and availability of service in 20 major cities)

1. Verizon Wireless

2. T-Mobile

3. Alltel

4. AT&T

5. Sprint

There you have it the best of the best in 2007. It’s really interesting how AT&T’s phones were rated at the top of the pile while their service was fourth in the best carrier category. Consumer Reports bases their report off 40 different phones so not every phone on the market was considered and newer ones released late in 2007 might not have made it on the list.

While rating systems are good for gauging different aspects of phones, in the end it’s the consumer that decides the “best” phone. In 2007, Motorola topped the list of most purchased phone with the Motorola RAZR V3, followed by Motorola RAZR V3m (V3m has a music player and runs on Verizon Wireless) neither of which made the top five in Consumer Reports testing. The LG VX8300 and the Apple iPhone followed close behind Motorola as the most purchased phones.

In 2007, Apple helped change the cell phone market by introducing its iPhone, and now in 2008 Google looks to make some waves of its own by developing an open source operating system for cell phones (Android). It’s going to be another interesting and competitive year in the cell phone market, we’ll see who tops the list in ’08.

Thats a good point Raj.  So here's the problem then, according to Consumer Reports to get the best phone you need to get one on AT&T, but they have almost the worst service, so do you have to get a lesser phone to have superior call quality?

It is interesting that the higher rated phones are ATT I have service with Verizon and wish they had more interesting phones.  I want a treo but don't want to buy a 2 year old phone.

Carolyn, it does seem like AT&T has more flashy phones *cough* iPhone *cough*.  And thats probably a good call to wait and get a phone that has newer technology in it than one that has been out for a long time and might be replaced or outdated soon.

Not sure on what factors they base their ratings (I can guess), but it would be interesting to see them take this a step further and compare phones and smartphones for business use vs consumer use.  I just don't see the iphone as breaking into the corporate market (not sure they want to) in a big way.  It's cool and looks good, but I wouldn't trade windows mobile capability for an iphone.

I have a question you can probably answer...are there generally any significant differences between a phone logoed for Verizon and one logoed for AT&T?  In other words, is T Mobile's Motorola V195 comparable to the AT&T Motorola V365?  They look similar, which made me wonder.

Another interesting post -- I always learn something!

Happy New Year!

Hey Susan,

That's a great point, I didn't put how they rated the phones because I did assume most people could guess how phones are rated (battery life, speaker sound, button sizes...ect.).  Comparing phones v. smartphones would be very helpful and maybe even a blog idea for me...thanks.

I agree right now the iPhone isn't the strongest business device (and it syncs a lot smoother if you have a mac), but come the next few months when third party vendors will be allowed to make programs I'm sure it will get a lot more functions, features and uses.  The iPhone is still new and expanding in my opinion, its going to be interesting to see what they do with it.

To answer your question about the phones, the biggest problem for Verizon is they don't operate on the same type of technology as AT&T and T-Mobile so their phones work differently (and Verizon phones have a locked in user interface meaning they control what the phone can do not the manufacture).

A V195 is different than a V365, for Motorola's V series phones the higher the number the more features it has. Most notably for these two phones is the v365 has a camera and larger outside and inside display along with expandable memory via transflash.  If your comparing phones from T-Mobile to ATT they should be basically the same phone IF they are the same model.

Whew...hope that answers your question.

It does!  I use a cell phone for well, my phone, (LOL) and a Treo 750 for everything else (gps, email, calendar, etc.) -- my phone is a v365 and it looks like the v195, which is why I was wondering -- and I also wondered why the V195 in particular was a top phone and not the V365.  Not that it matters, but it did make my mind wander a little about the differences, particularly between vendors.

Not being a Mac person (boo hiss LOL), I guess my excitement over the iPhone is minimal even though it is sexy looking...yep, 30 lashes for me...I am a PC Windows person, even if the PC guy is geeky and the Mac guy is, well, awfully cute.  ;-)

Thanks!

You know Marina, I was surprised that the blackberry didn't make it at the top of the smartphones list too, so many people are ADDICTED to that thing.

I have a two or three year old Treo 650 and although it does do everything I want I am getting tired of it (how's that for being a consumption addict?).  Anyway does anyone know what's on the horizon for new phones?  I'm sure the next whiz bang best phone is just around the corner.

Will ~ That's exactly how I am too, always needed the latest and greatest.  Although since I got my iPhone I haven't been looking into phones that much, its just amazing.  But one good website I can recommend is Phone Scoop, they have a lot of good stuff about current and up and coming phones.

Hope that helps.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the iphone.  Bought myself one AND both of my teenage girls.  Soon, I am going to LOWER our minute plan, as NOW they never CALL, they TEXT.  And unlimited family text plan is CHEAP!  Like the phone, LOVE the TOY!

My next phone is definitely going to be the LG Voyager.  I'm with Verizon and this phone is made as an iphone competitor with a touch screen and all the bells and whistles.  Better than an iphone in that the screen pops up to reveal a large keyboard ..... with actual keys.  Instead of touching a screen to type, you hit keys that provide a tactile response so you know which buttons you're pressing.

Nate ~ thats great, I've heard good things about the Voyager.  And thats a great point, a lot of people like the feel of buttons over the flat screen of the iphone.

As an iPhone man myself I can say it wasn't the easiest to learn, but now that I've used it for a while I can assure you it gets fast, just as fast as a tactile phone.  I would replace my iPhone with anything...but again thats just one opinion.
