How "SUSTAINABLE" is Your City?

I was reading a copy of Midwest Living Magazine over the holidays, and came across a small little article that was titled, "Midwest Metros Get Green".  The title caught my eye, so I read a little more....

This article was talking about cities that had been ranked as being among the most 'sustainable' in America.  To be considered 'sustainable', the group who did the ranking looked at public transportation, local food sources, energy usage, water and air quality, park space, walkability, and more.  Other factors they looked at, in the event of how well a city can perform in the face of emergencies, was energy crisis preparedness and natural disaster risk.

SustainLane.com is the group that did this ranking.  In addition to the above factors, they also took into consideration the quality of building done in the area - green buildings, clean technology development, quality of life in areas, and city planning and management.

The highest ranked city for 2006 was Portland Oregon, due to their high quality of life factors, the involvement of a high number of residents in city policy and planning, as well as a number of other factors.  Portland's motto is, "It's Not Easy Being Green".

Other cities that ranked highly were: San Francisco in second place; Seattle; Chicago, Oakland, New York City, and BostonBoston was the only city here in New England that made this list.  Denver continues to garner accolades, just as they did on America's Smartest Cities survey awhile back.  I would have thought Portland Maine would have made it, but their name wasn't mentioned.  Burlington Vermont is another New England city that seems to me should have been on that list as well.

I was disappointed that they didn't do any type of rankings for smaller cities and/or towns.  Perhaps next time, I guess!  If they had, I'm sure we would have seen several New Hampshire towns on that list, including Portsmouth New Hampshire.  We would rank pretty highly on a number of the factors they took a look at, especially on the walkablity - this is a terrific walking town; park space - we have all kinds parks all over the town; and of course our quality of life in Portsmouth and New Hampshire is just wonderful!

How did YOUR city fare?  Check out the list online to see!

I can't believe Miami is 29 - there has to be a mistake, as much as I love Miami, "sustainable" is not a word to describe it.  Thanks for the head up Ann - very different and informative.

MoniKa - I do wonder at times how we get skipped over on alot of these types of rankings, but then again, maybe we want to keep NH and all we have here at our fingertips to ourselves.  :-)   We certainly do have a GREAT way life here!!

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Carole - My parents used to live in Ohio for a few years, and really enjoyed it while they were there.  My mom has subcribed to "Midwest Living" for years at this point, and my dad continues it still because she always got it.  I do get to read different magazines when I'm down there, that's for sure!

Nothing wrong with being last on that list - plenty of cities that didn't make it all!

Ines - You made me laugh at Miami being on that list!

Thanks for stopping by & commenting!

Ann, it made me feel good that you were reading Midwest Living; you know, being in Cleveland I have the perspective that everyone else is reading The New Yorker etc so I was smiling at your choice of reading material! As for thie list, this is really something people need to strive toward

Dee - thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!  #14 is pretty darn good, I'd say!!

Carole - You know, I don't think I've ever read a New Yorker, probably never will at this point.  I love magazines like Midwest Living (at my parents!), Country Living, Southern Living, Taste of Home, etc.  Always fun and interesing things to read about that aren't in the "news type" things to read about.  And they're relaxing magazines to read, too.  I'm glad ya felt good!!  ;-))

Ann, I jsut came over from Jason Price's post and I must say this is a very interesting post.. thanks for sharing the links. The SustainLane.com is a very cool study. Being in West Palm Beach, Florida.. this factor hits home.. "energy crisis preparedness and natural disaster risk".  We didn't make top 50 :(   see you around!

Ann, very interesting. I was suprised that Portsmouth wasn't there too since I fee that I know about it after your articles. Maybe next time.

I did see that Sacramento was 13th. I do think it's do to the size, the unemployment figures and the anticipated growth projection for the areas.

It must be a difficult decision coming up with a list of City's. I don't think I would want that job...

Nick M. - thanks for stopping by and for your comments!  Who knows what next year's rankings might bring for your area......  I knew that energy crisis preparednesss and natural disaster risk would hit home for Floridians.

Hi Gena - thank you for that really nice compliment!  It's so easy to write about my area.

Sacramento being #13 on that list is great, and I wasn't at all surprised to see it highly ranked, going by the things you've written about your area on both of your blogs.

Thanks!

Neat post, Ann. I used to live in Boston (well, across the Charles) and I am impressed they were ranked so high. Maybe even a little surprised. I was not surprised about San Francisco. Interesting that a number of teh cities were not in the midwest.
