Doctors, Realtors and society

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams

I was talking to a friend today he is a pharmaceutical sales rep.  Interestingly the majority of doctors tell him that when a patient comes in they (the patient) already know what drug prescription they want the doctor to write.  And to keep the patient happy they write it.  No expert advice, no asking questions to find out what is going on with the patient and what they are trying to accomplish...just O.K. here is your prescription

Now consider the Realtors out there who go to a listing appointment and the seller tells them what price they want to list the home for.  and the Realtor says OK   the Realtor to get the client, to keep them happy puts the property on the market.  It may or may not sell...but to keep the client they do it.  (in this market listing to high and if the property does not sell it can cause you to sell for less in the long run)

Now not all doctors and Realtors are doing this.  What if they had a serious conversation with you?  You go to them for their skills, you want them to be honest and to help you accomplish your goal.

If you want medicine there are many online pharmacies.  If you want your home listed there are many online brokers.  But if you want a professional, someone with strong skills....hire one and expect an open conversation about what you are trying to accomplish.

Norm, I know that you are right and I think it's because of 2 main reasons: (1) The agent doesn't know much and (2) the agent will do anything to get the listing.

I think it's ashame that doctors do this. A doctor did this for a relative of mine and was prescribing a drug that cant be prescribed on a continuing basis, needless to say my uncle passed away however the dr and the pharmacist should have stopped this and didnt because they were being placid. They both no longer have license to practice because of their negligence. In our industry all I hope is all the people getting out of the business are the ones that are negligent in their listings and actions in this business.

Plus the doctors get paid by the insurance companies.  WE need to get paid by the sale.  Both are excellent servants though.

Good post with "food for thought"  Tell it the way it is......I haven't the inclination to take an "over priced listing" in this slow market.  What's the point?

It comes down to professionalism.  Who is the professional?  Any monkey can list a house.  People come to us as the expert in our field and should rely on us to educate them about the true value of a property.  When they won't listen, I simply say, "NEXT!"  I don't have the time or energy to take over-priced listings.  I have told plenty of prospects that if they aren't interested in the information I have, again, to educate them about the true value of their home, then we aren't going to do business together.  There are plenty of agents who will take the listing, but no professional will bother showing an over-priced listing.  If I do so much to educate a potential seller, what do you think I share with a potential buyer?

Here's to a GREAT '08!

Be of service! The rewards will come!
