Colorado High Park Wildfire

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with New Paradigm Partners LLC EB #1326335

Late yesterday morning, we noticed the first plume of smoke directly west of us up in the mountains - always an unwelcome sight this time of year, but an expected one with the high temperatures, low humidity, little recent rainfall and high winds. Within a couple of hours, it was obvious that it was going to be a big one.

High Park CO Wildfire June 9 2012

As of this morning, the fire had burned over 8,000 acres, destroyed 18 homes, and forced the evacuation of over 1600 people. It's currently 0% contained - this is very difficult terrain for the firefighters - very steep, heavily wooded and hard to access.

I was up at around 3AM this morning and when I looked out, I could see a huge red glow lighting the smoke plume from beyond the foothills. It looked like Mordor in Lord of the Rings.

And this morning, the smell of smoke was very strong, and the view to the west was totally obscured by the smoke plume. This is going to be a bad one - this area to the west of Fort Collins has many homes.

Those are prettiy amazing photos! I see news clips of fires in various parts of the country, but in New England we have more of a problem with flooding from coastal storms. Your blog and photos make it more realistic. I'm glad yoiur ok, and hope they get the fires contained.

Dick, I know you well enough to know that you are a very prudent man...but nevertheless I will be concerned for you, Mary, your pets, your home and your new guests.  Take care...I will be thinking about you over the course of this.

And, please keep us updated as you can.

Dick,

Hope you stay safe and this is contained quickly.  Haven't heard anything of this fire yet here on the east coast, but probably will soon.

Dick, we were having many wildfires until it started raining a few weeks ago. We went through a terrible summer of fires in 1997 and I know exactly what you are talking about when you say evacuations and people losing homes. It is terrible. Sending prayers your way that it is under control and that the winds die down.

Hi Dick. These fires are never good to hear about since they destroy so much in its path. I trust it will get under control soon, since you are very close to it. I trust all is well with you and Mary. I remember how bad our Texas wildfires were last year. Many homes were lost then too. Stay Safe and Be Careful!

Whoa.  Your photos show the enormity of that fire.  It looks horrific.  Let's pray for the best.  Stay inside, if possible, and avoid breathing smokey air.  Any rain forecast?

Dick: The pictures are impressive, if scary because of the implications.  We recently had wildfires here in Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula.  I hope they are able to start containing the fires there in Colorado- Thanks for sharing, and good luck- Stay safe!

This fire is so sad for many families.

The other day we couldn't even see Pike's Peak in Co Springs, 2+ hours south of the fire.

Praying for all these families and fire fighters.
