How To Conserve Energy With Energy Saving Appliances

Not all energy saving appliances conserve energy equally. That’s because often times the terms ‘energy conservation’, ‘going green’ and what not are misused or can be a little misleading.

Here are a few tips on what to look for when shopping for energy saving appliances to conserve energy.

How To Conserve Energy With Energy Saving AppliancesTo be energy efficient, an appliance should do two things:

1.  Reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions caused by the inefficient use of energy.

2.  Save on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features and comfort.

Use these two points as a guide when you’re shopping for energy saving appliances.

To save the most energy savings it’s best to start consider what appliances in your home use the most energy.  Here are the top three home appliance energy users along with some things that you can do to conserve energy:

Heating and Cooling – Change your filters regularly, tune up your HVAC equipment at lease once a year, install a programmable thermostat, and make sure to seal your heating and cooling ducts.

Water Heaters – Set your thermostat to 49 C (120 F) or lower, with an older water heater consider wrapping it in an insulating jacket, plan ahead – most water heaters last between 10-15 years and when they fail, they’re a big mess to replace.  If you’ve got an older water heater you may want to consider budgeting for an energy saving replacement before it’s too late.

Household Appliances – With washers be sure to use cold water whenever possible and try to wash full loads only, clothes dryers will conserve more energy when the lint traps are cleaned and a moisture selector is used to avoid the over-drying of clothes, avoid rinsing dishes before you put them in the dishwasher: Rinsing dishes can use nearly 20 gallons of water before they’re even washed.  With today’s dishwashers and efficient detergents your dishes should come clean by simply scraping off any food from the dish.
