Celebration of Reading

Some years ago I listened to a school teacher friend comment on her change of focus. Her goal had been to teach her third grade class to be competent readers. Her expanded view became to teach all eight year olds to read. This change of emphasishas led her to world travel during her vacations to bring her message to children of other countries.

button for reading and knowing stuff

My bush school in Queensland, Australia boasted two three feet shelves of mostly 19th century books (sometimes talking about 18th century explotations).

I recall vividly "The Voyages of Captain Cook" reporting in part the discovery of the east coast of Australia. He puttered around the Pacific until his demise at the hands of spear carrying unfriendlies.

Miniscule though this library was, it was at hand when I reached my reading explosion as an eight year old.

Reading is a personal passion. It has been available to me during the tribulations of my life, through years of pain and in long periods of convalescence.

I have had as many as a dozen books on the go at a time. In being cosmopolitan in reading, I might say that if had print on it, I usually read it. (My father took his joy of reading even further by always reading all instructions as well as tide heights and shipping information in the newspaper - and let's not forget the racing guide).

a reader's badge - cure boredom with curiosity

With technology changes I have been able to store my interests, in huge quantities, on my trusty Nook reader ~ never without it or its contents, so never a wasted moment no matter how fickle human clients might be in meeting attendance. So my Nook is a huge personal library of books to read, some that I have read and others that I have already read many times.

My Kindle Fire has an increasing storage as well. It comes into its own for newer books with included color graphics like photo instruction material.

I have this bent that I also read in other languages. This opens the world to me. It continues to satisfy my curiosity, fueled by my reading.

I read - and my gratitude for my teachers is boundless.

Love this blog. Reading is my passion, too, and I average 2 to 3 novels a week, some "fluff" and some literature. I can't get enough. I just got a Nook for Christmas and love it, although still enjoy the feel (and smell) of "real" books, too. Anyone, including any child, who reads well can't help but do well. Knowledge is power.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all teachers concentrated on teaching kids to read.  Without reading skills, there's not much hope of learning or keeping up with the rest of the class.  Reading, writing and math skills have been neglected and we need to make sure these skills are the focus of school curriculum.

I listen to books on CD in my car, read hard and paperbacks and have a kindle DX - I just finished The Corleone Family on CD and am on to a Deaver Kathryn Dance novel...

Gretchen - Great sentiments. So much information exists in writing. A lot of my books re in the used category and make up the biggest backlog. I am over 11"3" behind with them.

Doug - thanks for pointing out modern day challenges. I have seen the effects of non-reading on a lot of people who might have done better with more reading skills. I have tutored adults in reading with great results. It all starts with enthusiasm.

Wallace - great use of time. I have enjoyed lots of literature in spoken form over the years and still indulge occasionally. Sometimes listening has led me to reading the work as well.
