How To Add Facebook Widgets To Your Active Rain Blog
Most of us are now using Facebook in some fashion or another. We KNOW it's part of social media strategy and until something better comes along, seems like Facebook is still the 800 lb gorilla and we better feed it some bananas!
Did you know you can link your Facebook page with your Active Rain blog? Take a look at our right sidebar a couple of inches below our photo and you'll find a "Find us on Facebook" widget. You can add that with just a few clicks and keystrokes in the right place and we're going to give you the step by step on how to do the same for yourself!
First, go to your Facebook Fan page and navigate to your admin menu (click Edit Page and Update Info for instance).
You'll see the following on your left sidebar:
Select "Resources" and that will lead to this:
Select "Use social plugins" to get to this:
That leads to an entire menu of options to getting the code strictly for a Like button, to Recommendations, Comment stream boxes and a bunch more. Personally, we went for the "Like Box". So basically pick the style you want and click it. If you click "Like Box" you'll get the following:
You're going to edit the fields (hover over the question marks if you're not sure what the field is about). Copy your Facebook page web address into the top box. You can edit width and height to find what works for your page. You can select light or dark for color scheme (click it, but we've yet to see anyone select DARK). You can choose several other options, even type in a border color. Just try selecting and unselecting the boxes and you'll get a live simulation on the right so you can see what your final product format will be. Once you've worked through your options, click the "Get Code" button at the bottom.
Now you'll see something that looks like this:
Note there's THREE language formats across the top. As you click each one the code will change. Some are dependent on Java, so we opted for the IFRAME solution. The YELLOW highlighted code is code specific to our settings, so don't copy and put that on your blog unless you want to advertise for us! NOTE: There seems to be a glitch with the FB code generator. Manually insert http: just prior to //www.facebook.com in the first line of code before copying and pasting the code.
So once you've got the code in the format you want, highlight the code and copy. Now go to your Active Rain My Home Page. On the Left Sidebar select "Settings" and then click "Blog Settings".
Paste the code into the "Blog Description" box. And you CAN have plain text or other widgets before or after, your call. Once you've copied in the code, don't forget to hit the UPDATE button!
Now give it a couple of minutes to refresh, but you should now have a Facebook widget on your main Active Rain Blog.
