Assateague Island, MD

The ocean has a way of soothing my soul, the sand between my toes a way of warming my heart and the gentle breeze a way of magically blowing all the worries away ...

As I sat there on the beach on Assateague Island, I just felt happy and content. I watched my girls giggle while jumping waves, my parents' excitement of being able to experience this wonderful place with us and my husband feeling at peace.

Yes, the ocean has a way of soothing everyone's soul.

It doesn't happen very often that we all get to be together and get to seize the moment to create wonderful memories. I wish there was a way to bottle up the happiness and serenity of it all. Have it handy for those times when it's needed the most, when it's been months since I last hugged my parents and Skype is just not filling the void anymore ... when the next deployment comes around and I'll need to silence the fears ... when the news are instilling horror in me and no news keep me awake for days.

I'll cherish the memories of that perfect day and I take comfort in knowing that those will help bridge the distance.

And if the fears of deployment and the pain of missing my husband become just a little too much to bear, I can always go back to paradise and allow the ocean to soothe my soul, the sand to warm my heart and the breeze to blow away the worries.

Hi Andrea,  I enjoyed sharing your time at the ocean with family.  I live on Fort Myers Beach, a barrrier island hugging the southwest coast of the Gulf.  Must admit that we don't spend near enough time just enjoying it.

Hi Andrea, I know exactly how you feel when sitting on the beach looking out at the ocean. Those precious moments like these when your family is together have to hold you over through the tougher times. Love those pictures and that is sure one awesome sand castle!

I was just talking about taking a trip to the beach last night. After seeing your photos I think it'll be a little sooner than previously planned. I need a break!

Thank you Bill! Aren't the things that are closest to us always the ones we don't go enjoy enough? We have Wash DC at our door steps but rarely go sight-seeing. I wouldn't mind having the ocean a bit closer to me but as long as I can get to it within 2-3 hours, I'm okay with it!

Hi Cindy, they've always done so in the past and I'm counting on these new memories to help me through the next time! Thank you - the sand castle took us quite awhile to built, too, and what a great time we had! There was a tourist posing with it to show off to his family :-)

Hi Jay, a day at the beach can work wonders! Go and enjoy!

Close by the lake gives me that same feeling.  But I am overdue a beach trip myself.

Thank you for sharing your peace with us Andrea!  It's tough being in the military sometimes and we all need to truly cherish the times we have to spend together...they can be too few :)!

Hi Tammy, any body of water and blissful quiet can do the trick. You are fortunate to have a piece of paradise at your doorstep.

Hi Brenda, so true! We learned to make room for the little stuff and value what's truly important.

Neat photos Andrea!  I'd love being on that sailboat on the horizon, as long as someone else would expend their energy to sail it.  I just want to relax today!

Thank you Myrl! Just looking at them makes me feel good! I loved the lonely sailboat on the horizon .. so very peaceful.

Hi Lisa, thank you for taking interest in my little world! Sharing parts of our military life is something I never expected but it sort of came natural.. it's healing in a way.

Andrea - I almost cried reading your post.  We who are not in the military - nor our grown children - take for granted that we can reach out and hug our chilkdren/grandchildren.  While military families face separation from extended families - and separation of moms and dads.  God bless you, your family, and your husband today.

Hi Mike, thank you! The perfect place to recharge and relax.. we should take the time to do just that more often.

Hi Louise, thank you so much for your heartfelt thoughts! It's tough when you come from such a close-knit family like I do. When hubby is away that distance becomes even harder to bear ..
