That male buck is still in Velvet!

How do you explain to a three year old about why deer have fuzz on their antlers?  Needless to say, I guess he never saw one up close in Ohio that had velvet on their antlers this time of year.

Of course, I explained that this happens to all deer this time of year when they are re-growing there antlers.  That started another discussion.  We talked about buck scraps on tree and I finally decided, it is too early to explain all the details about this.

I am sure his dad will give him more information when he turns 12 and can go hunting.  In the mean time, just look at the picture.

Grandpa forgot how often little ones say WHY!

Thanks, Will, for sharing your experience and your photograph.  Grandfathers are expected to tell it as it is and are always reliable sources of wisdom.

Will,  That is a great picture.  It looks like the antlers are coated with frost.  What a great grand dad you are to answer all the "why's".

Hi Will,

Great photo and I agree with Belinda...you are a great granddad as those why questions can be difficult and hard to maintain your cool. I am sure these will be special moments and he will probably have a love for animals.

What a fantastic photo!!!! I did not know that male deer had fur on their antlers when they are young. But then the only deer I have ever seen is the little Florida deer.

As for grandchildren asking WHY to everything, I can certainly relate to that since my granddaughter is 5!!!

That sounds like an entertaining conversation, Will.  What a great picture.  We don't see to many around here with the velvet on, but they're around.
