When Realtors Attack...
A great post there from The Christiansens. Might not be titled correctly, though- as in this case the Realtor was being attacked. Mr. Angry Unprofessional Clown Posing as a Realtor was doing the attacking.
For the most part, I handle these in the same manner. Make no mistake about it- I'll Stand My Ground when necessary, but foolishness like this has no place in our business.
It goes back to an old saying, though: you get more of what you tolerate. If we in our profession that still value the very words "profession" and "professional" continue to oblige and/or capitulate to goofballs and their goofball behavior, what are we going to keep getting?
Yep, more goofballs and goofball behavior. I'll also point out another important aspect of this conversation/equation: It only takes a minute for us to blow it and forever lose our moral high ground. If Team Christiansen had a reputation for being goofballs themselves, their complaint about this goofball would ring rather hollow.
Likewise, if words out of my mouth were more fit for a street corner or side alley than my church, 1) the Lord wouldn't like it (which is of the utmost importance to me) and 2) I'd forever forfeit my rights to complain about anyone else using obscenities in their dealings with me.
Hate to use the old "practice what you preach" adage, but it's fairly appropriate here. At a minimum, we must provide professionalism if we're to expect professionalism in return.
I'll never forget the phone call I received from Mr. Angry Agent. There was a miscommunication about a showing on one of his listings, and he wasn't happy. Not at all.
I answered the phone and he started SCREAMING at me with a lot of profanity thrown in there as well.
I hung up on him.
He called me back screaming again, but this time he asked me if I hung up on him. I calmly said yes, and that if was ready to talk to me in a civil tone, I would talk.
More screaming. More profanity. I hung up again.
It was almost comical.
The third time he called me he was calm, and we talked about the situation, and got on the same page. Sometimes the real estate profession can be tough and often times it's stressful. That said, you have to keep your cool out there. What does screaming and yelling prove?
Was this guy trying to intimidate me? Maybe. But it didn't work. All he did was make himself look like a fool.
What have you done in this situation? Hang up? Yell back? Laugh? Be careful out there. Sometimes Realtors do attack! :)
