Northern Alabama & Southern Tennessee Trail Of Tears Motorcycle Ride

There are actually two Trail of Tears rides here in the Tennessee Valley; the Trail of Tears Remembrance Ride & the Trail of Tears Commemorative Ride.  Click on each of the preceding links for schedules, routes/maps and history of the Trail of Tears.  I'm not getting into the politics of the two groups sponsoring each ride as they have had their differences, but merely want to inform the public and riders who wish to attend that two distinct rides exist following different routes laid out years ago when Native American Indians were voluntarily and forcibly relocated from southeastern United States to Oklahoma.  Depending on the ride you Trail you want to follow your ride will either start in Chattanooga Tennessee or Bridgeport Alabama...if you're up for riding, why not pick trail this year and a different one next year.  Either way you're riding through the beautiful Tennessee Valley.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was a black mark in American history and the beginning of what would ultimately lead to the death of thousands of Native American men, women and children.  Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw,Cherokee and Seminole Indians were given the option of voluntarily moving or faced the military forcibly moving them from their homes and millions of acres of their land.  Most moved voluntarily, but some chose to stay and fight and many died, however a group of Seminole's chose to fight from the Florida swamps and won their freedom such as it was in those swamps.  A few thousand of Alabama's Choctaw Indians were able to remain in Alabama and Mississippi.

I've been planning this ride for a while, however a Tennessee client needs to finalize a deal on a new home in Huntsville and I confirmed the date before I realized the Trail of Tears ride was the same day...looks like I may not be able to make the ride this year...bummer...it's my one day off every year.

Ed-everybody's a critic and I expect no less from you...can't wait to hear what George has to say :)

I still find it hard to comprehend that we did this...here...in the US.

Too bad you'll have to miss it this year Nick, sounds like a great event.  Personally I've never been a big fan of motorcycles but if it's something you enjoy, that's cool.

Nick, what a shame not wanting to stick my nose in your business, but why not work a deal with a coworker a referal fee that would make it interesting for them to cover you! And go for the Ride and tell the client you already had planned this a year ago!!! Might be good for all!

Roger-we'll see what I can arrange. I started riding smaller bikes back when I was 17...it was a different kind of fun then...mostly now it's a way to escape, unwind and disconnect.

John-one thing for sure...it ties up traffic around here for a while...lots of fun and lots of people coming out to line the streets and watch all the bikes.

Endre-I've done that before...sometimes it works out well...I have a tough time letting go...not a control freak...just like doing it myself...your input is always appreciated.

Ed-maybe it's late, but I don't get..."acerbic"...as for calling my friends Nitwits....don't do that...no matter how true it may be :)

Nevermind...I got what you meant by acerbic...I tend to lean that way myself!

Good Morning Nick!  I do not "ride", but you make it sound wonderful!  I could use another way to escape sometimes!

As for the Trail of Tears, one of my favorite books is Walking the Trail by Jerry Ellis.  My great grandmother was Cherokee, so It has always been important history to me.

Reschedule your clients and take your ride!!!!!!

This is a ride that commemorates an event that we should remember and hopefully never repeat anything like this again in our history.

I think it's really a shame you have to miss this ride. I hope you can work something out. You know what they say about all work and no play...

I'm part Cherokee, and I remember this part of my history lesson very well.

Jackie-I agree, but bikers ride for a lot of different reasons.

Amy-my in-laws actually have a little Cherokee blood lines as well as a few friends from other Indian tribes/nations. Hey...we could be cousins :)

Gabe-I've learned to never say never...although it would be hard to imagine something like this happening today.

Debbie-see my answer to Amy...Cuz!

Nick I will be much much nicer than Ed in my comment, because that is just the kind of great guy I am ...... LOL

But Ed is right there are portions of the first picture that do resemble the John Travolta of to they, but I will not point them out :)

Nick buddy I hope that there is a change in you schedule that will allow you to participate in this event this year.  But I know that if you can't be on the ride in person you will be there in spirit.

Nick  I was totally unaware of the Trail of Tears and its' negative reflection on American values.  It is an important piece of history and I am suggesting - not all Amerivan hidtory started in the "Original 13".  I wish more people would develop posts like this - we would all learn so much more about the US

Karen-I hope everyone who reads this post clicks on the two ride links to get a more complete telling of the hardships the different tribes endured.

Nick, That's a bit of history that is not well known. That was not one of our nations finest hours. You're looking rather formibable glaring at the camera with a look that say's, "You talking to me?"
