Past Trail of Tears blog posts
There are actually two Trail of Tears rides here in the Tennessee Valley; the Trail of Tears Remembrance Ride & the Trail of Tears Commemorative Ride. Click on each of the preceding links for schedules, routes/maps and history of the Trail of Tears. I'm not getting into the politics of the two groups sponsoring each ride as they have had their differences, but merely want to inform the public and riders who wish to attend that two distinct rides exist following different routes laid out years ago when Native American Indians were voluntarily and forcibly relocated from southeastern United States to Oklahoma. Depending on the ride you Trail you want to follow your ride will either start in Chattanooga Tennessee or Bridgeport Alabama...if you're up for riding, why not pick trail this year and a different one next year. Either way you're riding through the beautiful Tennessee Valley.
The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was a black mark in American history and the beginning of what would ultimately lead to the death of thousands of Native American men, women and children. Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw,Cherokee and Seminole Indians were given the option of voluntarily moving or faced the military forcibly moving them from their homes and millions of acres of their land. Most moved voluntarily, but some chose to stay and fight and many died, however a group of Seminole's chose to fight from the Florida swamps and won their freedom such as it was in those swamps. A few thousand of Alabama's Choctaw Indians were able to remain in Alabama and Mississippi.
A few past Trail of Tears photos:
I've been planning this ride for a while, however a Tennessee client needs to finalize a deal on a new home in Huntsville and I confirmed the date before I realized the Trail of Tears ride was the same day...looks like I may not be able to make the ride this year...bummer...it's my one day off every year.
If you need a knowledgeable real estate professional in Madison or Huntsville Alabama area, why don't you let me Google that for you! I also know outstanding agents in all states and Canada should you need help relocating to a new area.
