Learning from tonight's boxing match

I am watching the 12th round of a terrific boxing match between Jose Antonio Rivera & Alejandro Garcia from Worcester, MA. Rivera is winning. He came as an underdog, and he just had dropped Alejandro Garcia for the 5th time in the match. Gong. The round is over. And at 114-107, 116-106 and 116-106 we have a lopsided victory and new WBA Super welterweight champion of the World

This was a fascinating match. And a great lesson to me.

Garcia is a knockout puncher with both hands. Natural 154 lb fighter. Rivera came up in weight. Even at 142 lb he was not a big puncher.

You should have seen Garcia's pre-fight interview. He was all confidence. There will be a knockout. I was feeling sorry for Rivera before the fight started. And, boy, he proved me wrong.

So, how could that happen that Garcia's confidence ended up in fiasco? Is it because the level of confidence did not match the level of skills? Isn't it true that without the matching set of skills what people think is confidence is in reality simply arrogance?

It does not matter whether this is boxing, or real estate. Boosting confidence without working on the skills is not a winning proposition. extra

Jon, you hit it on the head. Education is king. Learn from others, use a mentor, pursue designations and the ability (and income) will follow!

True .  You must have the skill and education first.

Hi, Jon: You're right on the money.  It's all about having the skillset to do our jobs correctly.  Boxing or real estate, the lesson is still the same.

Jon, it could have also been that Garcia came into the fight over-confident, and not neccessarily underskilled... I would assume he had skills alright, since the other guy was considered the underdog... So is it still arrogance, now that he lost? Or is it simply that he got cocky by underestimating his opponent's ability, as opposed to over-estimating his own...  How many fights did he win before this by coming into the ring with a swagger? Just thinking out loud, so feel free to ignore this:-)

I'd put my money on a 142 guy before a 154 most of the time (quicker).  But do I agree with the point you're making in that confidence has to be backed by the skills.  Otherwise it does appear to be arrogance.

BTW, did you catch either of the 12-rounders Saturday night?  Roy Jones was 'confident'!

Jesse & Kathy - Of course, it is all about the skills. It is mind boggling seeing all this advice to be very confident... Knowledge gives confidence. If there is no knowledge and no skills, who needs our confidence?

Inna - it is interesting, indeed. What puzzled me in Garcia's pre-fight interview was the fact that he was so cocky, he did not even allow himself to think about it reasonably. This is contact sport, and there is always ALWAYS an option that you run into that one great hook and will wake up on the stretcher. Why embarrass yourself by bragging about what you would do, when you are not the only one in the ring.

And then in the very first round not a knockout master Jose Antonio Rivera drops him two times, and first time with a jab.

Hey, no matter what you think about yourself, there is always someone faster, stronger, smarter... You may simply not meet them yet, or know about them, but they are out to embarrass you you, if you get cocky.

As for the match, it was that rare occasion that such a good guy as Rivera - so good, that he is even boring - beats a guy, who lost only once in his professional career, and all other times won by knockout.

So, to answer your question, yes, he knocked out 22 out of 23 opponents (I may be off by one)

Tchaka - I am not sure you would do it with Garcia, too darn strong. Riviera just proved that his chin is even better than his skills, because this what helped him stand (he still was dropped once, but he claimed he was pushed).

Roy Jones will be my pleasure this coming Saturday, when they do the reruns for Pay per View. Can't wait to see it. I admire Jones, and his comeback from losses to Tarver is incredible.

It is all interesting. Roy beat Hopkins (long ago), Tarver beat Roy twice, then Hopkins beats Tarver in an incredible fight, going up in weight unprecedented. I guess now Roy has to go and beat Taylor, who beat Hopkins... Isn't that something?
