rugs

Area rugs are one of those design puzzle pieces that can provide a lot of punch and purpose to any space. You can find a rug to fit any room or any budget.  Not only do they look good and add dazzle, they can define spaces,  protect your floors and absorb sounds making your rooms feel cozy and warm no matter how large or open.

Selecting the right rug for your space is pretty straight forward.  The type of room and how your furniture will be arranged will determine the size and style you should choose.  Start by measuring the whole space.  If it makes it easier to visualize, make a rough sketch of the room and how you will place the furniture. Generally you want the rug centered to some focal point or dominant feature in the room like a fireplace or large window. Use it to define spaces in large, long and open areas that serve more than one function.

In open flowing spaces, if using more than one rug, you don't need to match them exactly. Stay in the same general tones and textures. You can vary the patterns for interest. The texture of your rug really depends on the room and what feel you are going for; shaggy and fluffier for warm and cozy or a bit flatter and 3D for elegance and interest.  Leaving a border of your flooring showing around the rug will make your space look larger. Never mash rug edges up against walls and baseboards. Middle of the room floating arrangements look best when furnishings are placed entirely on top of the rug or around the perimeter of the rug.  Placing the front legs of your furniture pieces about 6 inches onto the edges of the rug works for groupings with pieces arranged along walls.

In dining rooms, your rug should be several feet wider than the length and width of your table.  Determine this by the width of your chairs.  The rug should be large enough for the chair to sit on it when it's pushed back from the table.  This keeps chair legs from being caught on the rug edges.

Remember, less is more.  Filling a room with numerous small rugs will chop up a space, tire the eye and looks cheap. Following these simple rules will make your spaces shine.  Adding a beautiful new rug is a simple way of changing the look and feel of your space without painting or buying new furniture! Try it out and see.
