New Shopping Center in the Florida Keys?Big Box Store

In the "News-Barometer", a local newspaper in the Lower Keys and Marathon talked of a proposed 500,000 square foot shopping center on Rockland Key (Mile Marker 9) and was supported by a large number of people at the Monday night town meeting on Big Coppitt Key (Mile Marker 10).

If built, it is proposed to bring much needed jobs and an economic boost to the Lower Keys.  Rumors for a big box store(s) to anchor the complex with a mix of other local and regional commercial shops, offices and restaurants on the 33 acre site have been spreading for months throughout the Keys.

The Monroe Board of County Commissioners is expected to hold a public hearing in October 2012 to determine many issues and challenges of building on the site.

There are no contracts in place yet as to what national chains may come.  It is said that they need 2 large anchor stores, but they have no agreements to date.  There has been a lot of speculation and rumor that developers are looking to Wal-Mart or Target to anchor the center.

The Keys have long been known for their Mom and Pop stores with a smattering of larger chains (Outback Steak house, TGIFridays, etc...)  Having a big box store may become problematic for some of the smaller chains, but most people travel off the "rock" to shop in those big box stores anyway.  Less traveling on our roads, less traffic, less accidents....who knows.

What do you think?  Would you still consider moving to the Keys if you had a big box store here?  Or would it entice you to move here knowing you would have some of the shopping luxuries of the mainland?

Thinking of buying or selling in the keys?  Give me a call, I would love to help!

I think if big box stores show up, and can stay in business, it's definitely a good sign for the local economy.  Hope it doesn't hurt the Mom and Pops though.
