Do you ask your buyers to remove their shoes?Shoes

You’ve been trying to sell your home, and your realtor keeps telling you to keep your home in ‘show ready’ condition. And yet, every buyer that comes through your door traipses mud all over your white carpets and tile floors. Like many homeowners who want to sell your home, you may be considering if you want to ask your potential buyers to remove their shoes at the door.

Some people say that a small discreet sign at the door asking people to remove their shoes shows “pride of ownership” and the fact that you care for your home well. If I don’t let people wear shoes in my home, the thinking goes, then buyers will understand that I am meticulous in my housekeeping and the upkeep of my home.

Others say that the inconvenience to visitors may make them not want to buy. Some buyers are so uncomfortable with this that they refuse to even see the house.

So what’s a homeowner to do? How about a door mat, or two? They can be decorative, and, while they won’t guarantee that no mud gets brought in, they certainly do lessen the impact.

What do you think?

In all the years I've been in the real estate business, and representing home buyers almost exclusively since 1990, I've never had a buyer object to removing their shoes.

I try to remember to remind them to wear easy slip on and off shoes.  Not so easy in winter months.

If a seller has carpet near the frong door, it behooves them to place a paper cover on the carpet.

I laways remove my shoes at my house so I automatically remove shoes at showings. When I have a listing where the carpet is white or if sellers request that shoes be removed I provide booties at the front door for prospects to use and leave a sign to remove shoes.

Can't imagine why it would be a big deal for anyone to remove their shoes, especially if it's raining or snowing, that's just common sense.

Buy a box of shoe covers from the drugstore and request all that enter wear them. It works and people don't have to take their shoes off. Just slip them on and throw them away when your done. They are the blue shoe covers you see in the hospitals.

Good morning Wayne & Jean,

If my shoes made it past the entranceway my Mother would give me a ride on her broom; old habits are hard to break.

Make yourself a great day.

I always remove my shoes and encourage my buyers to do the same- Especially if I know that the homeowner has young children who are crawling we'll even use disposable booties.

That's a common request of sellers here at the Jersey Shore...some seller's also provide the booties others have mentioned.

I don't mind removing my shoes boots when requested by the seller, and buyers don't seem to mind either... but it is nice if they provide booties and even a chair or bench makes it easier for people to sit while removing them and putting them back on ...

Wayne and Jean-Requests to remove shoes are honored without griping. Shoe covers are nice to have although I don't see them very often here.
