Abbey The Dog And A Letter To God

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

I had been reading along the way the last couple of years many friends who had lost their family dog or their family cat and how saddened they had been by that experience. Until you go through it yourself you don't really realize how much that furry being means in your life with their supreme kindness and undying faithfulness and loyalty to you and so much unconditional love they give to you. A friend I know who recently lost his buddy, Trooper, sent the story below along looking at this situation through a child's eyes in a letter to God and an unexpected reply from the Post Office that I thought I would share with you all. Those "furr balls" are truly little miracles of life in our lives. We miss them so much when they are gone.

Abbey The Dog

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought that we could, so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? Abbey died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much.
I'm happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith, addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.

That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it.

Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.'

Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey and Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in Heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need bodies in Heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I'm sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

Hi Gary - What a wonderful way to ease a child's pain - somebody at the post office is a quiet hero. I've had pets my whole life, and as bad as missing them is, I wouldn't think of trading it for the joy they have brought into my life.

Gary-What a heart touching letter and such a special angel there was at the post office to do that for Abby. Dogs are wonderful friends who never judge you but give you unconditional love and you know how I feel about my babies and the thought of losing them one day breaks my heart. Thank you for sharing such a touching letter. Glad to see you back to blogging regularly as I know recently you must have been on a blogging hiatus. Thought maybe you found yourself a girlfriend to occupy your blogging time. If you ever do make sure she gives you unconditional love.

Ken: Sorry about Boo Boo. I love that breed, the chocolate Lab. You can relate to the family member thought. I appreciate you stopping by.

Richard: Furr balls do give us so much unconditional love you are right Rich.

Dick: Yes we have to risk to love and realize all of our mortality as living creatures and remember the good memories when they are gone. Excellent point about so much joy.

Dorie: I liked the letter too and truth be known I got those feelings as well. I did want to share that letter of a post office hero in this story.

Eli Maria: Hi. I always have the expression if I can be half as good as a dog thinks I am and show as much unconditional love as possible from me with them as my role model, well I'm doing ok. Some days with the blogging I just turn into the busy boy with the "other stuff." I'll try to do better :)

Hi Gary. I join the others in tears and am very, very moved by this and your expressions of love for your own dog. This is exceptional and not something I will soon forget. As others have said unconditional love and joy is what our pet friends provide always and so when they pass the void is great and the pain inexplicable. With that said, they are so giving I could never be without a companion.

PetProject Stamp of Approval

Gary, Sheila Anderson told me that you had written a wonderful story that ought to be featured in PetProject.  Of course, she was right.

How wonderful for the post office employee to take time to do this for the little girl and her mother...the kindness of strangers and the fact that there are no better bridges between people than a common love of our pets.

Sheila: It does seem that it is a double edged sword, so much joy our pets give us while they are alive yet with shorter lifespans they pass so soon. Precious gifts while they are here, then treasured memories afterward.

Mona: Very good bonds between people in understanding what kindness really is in life with knowing the love of our pet. Thanks for the feature in the Group.

Gary-Sounds like you had a great pet. But you have an even better kid. I wonder how often postal employees go out of their way to do things like this? I know some do special things around Christmas. That was a nice jesture on someone's part.

Gary, there is no consolation when a cherished friend dies. The only thing that eases the pain is honoring the lost friend by saving another who needs us. I hope that your friend was able to do that.

Wayne: Incredible heart on the part of the postal employee for sure.

Sheila: I very much like the cycle of life idea to move on and save another pet. Great consoling to continue exchanging love back and forth between animal and human.

Gary, you really shouldn't make me cry when I'm at work. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is because I still miss Pat and we lost him 9 years ago!

Gary, I'm sobbing like a baby. My dog has been losing lots of weight recently. We took her to the vet and fortunately, they can't find anything wrong but we have taken to feeding her homemade chicken soup with her food. She is eating again and hopefully on the road to recovery. She's 11 years old so I know we probably only have her for a few more years if we're lucky. It's nice to know God will take such good care of her.

Gary, I lost my dog suddenly yesterday. I'm hoping she's in dog heaven right now. After all, I think God has a special place in his heart for them.

Connie: Our dogs are our family as you know with Pat. This story was intended to bring tears, but tears are good. They cleanse...

Tammie: I am most sorry about your dog. I was worried from your first comment. That weight loss is a scary symptom sign. I am most sure your dog is in heaven. Hang on to the good memories. Love and (((hugs))). Tammie, also many here including William Johnson writing about his dog, Sharon Lee, writing about her cat who had passed, wrote a blog post about their pets. You could do that as well as a tribute. Everyone likes to learn about them. My thoughts are with you.... Post in the pet groups too. Take care my friend...

Sad that this person is trying to pass this 2006 story off as his own without crediting the actual people involved... Shameless self promotion

Liz: What are you talking about? This is a story about Meredith and her dog. It was passed along to me from a friend whose own dog also recently died. Peace.

Hi Gary,

Wonderful story and I suspect your daughter healed faster too. I still miss my 2 girls, Princess and Snowy, who passed on at 15 yrs old in 2009. I have 3 little rescue dogs now and love them dearly but still miss my other 2. I hope my dogs are with my mother and father now.  Great Post!
