Crowe Lake, Marmora's Secret

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Lanthorn Real Estate LTD., Trenton, Ontario

Where do people who live in cottage country own their own cottages? Bet you never thought of that question before.

In the Quinte area we are surrounded by water on all sides. We have lakes, rivers, streams, and every type of fresh water body imaginable. You wouldn't think that folks who live here would have to own a cottage, but many do. Why not? the price of waterfront property is so reasonable in this area, why wouldn't you if you can afford it?

crowe lakeOne of the popular spots for locals is Crowe Lake near the little town of Marmora Ontario. Crowe Lake is a popular place in the summer. There are several camp grounds on the shores of this lake and there are all kinds of activities. Cottages on Crowe Lake range from the old fashioned smaller bunky type cottages all the way up to the upscale modern and very costly variety. It's a rather big lake, so there's something for everybody. The one thing everybody can share, no matter what their budget may be, is the spectacular view. It looks like a lake one would see in a beer commercial.

crowe lakeCrowe Lake is fed by the Crowe River which runs south from Bancroft and used to be a very important logging river. The logs would run down the river into Crowe Lake where some of them would be processed by the mills in Marmora and others would continue on down into the Trent River to Trenton. I have often thought that one of those fellows who reclaim old logs from the bottom of lakes and rivers would make a fortune around here.

crowe lakeIf you ever find yourself driving from Ottawa to Toronto (or vice versa) along highway 7, it would only be a five minute diversion for you. Marble Point Road, the road one takes to get to Crowe Lake runs right off of Highway 7 just a couple of hundred metres west of Marmora. It's worth a little side trip.

Crowe Lake is great for fishing and boating, and there's even a few sandy beaches for the swimmers in your family. The water is fresh and clean and on quiet days (such as the day I took these pictures) it reflects the clouds in the sky like a mirror.

If you are looking for a cottage on a lake with fresh clear blue water and you don't have a Muskoka kind of budget, then Crowe Lake might very well be the place for you. It's about two hours east of Toronto and two and a half hours west of Ottawa. Just take Highway 7 and you'll be there in no time. Call me when you get here though, I may have a couple of cottages to show you.

What a great post Malcolm.  I have never thought of this, and yet, perhaps, to a degree, I am living it.  We would regularly go to our cottage just off Sturgeon Lake when we lived in Caledonia and when we lived near Bolton and in Beeton.  We find ourselves visiting out cottage much less frequently now that we live in a more rural area on a treed lot across from a horse farm, and instead find ourselves looking for other things in our vacation time...
