In a rugged county filled with hills, rivers, and a sprawling lake, the small town of Bandera holds a really big place in the hearts of Texans. Located in the beloved Texas Hill Country less than an hour from San Antonio, Bandera reminds us of a different, more authentic, era, when a handshake was all the contract you needed, self-reliance was the norm, and chivalry was a given. There is a spirit of independence and individualism here that speaks of the cowboy tradition of hard work and hard play.
Bandera embodies the cowboy in its strong rodeo tradition. Even today you'll often see horses tied to downtown hitching posts. Bandera County dude ranches offer a taste of the cowboy lifestyle with horseback riding, trail rides, and chuck wagon meals. Secluded cabins tucked away in the hills throughout the county are perfect for watching wildlife, listening to the birds, and gazing at the stars. At local honky-tonks, the music is lively, the dance floor is full, and the beverages are cold and let's not forget "Shopping"! If you want to buy Boots, Jeans or the latest cowboy fashion without the big cowboy prices, make sure you check out the "Cowboy Store". I went in the other day to buy a pair of jean and it was no problem ordering special size or style that I needed. The prices on items were very competitive with any other Western wear store in the Hill Country or San Antonio area. My opinion they were better.
Now that the holidays are upon us what better place to come and check out a calendar of fun.
See Santa coming to town the "cowboy way", cut down your own Christmas tree, gather on the banks of the Medina River at City Park to enjoy amazing displays of Christmas lights & holiday vignettes. Enjoy music by K.R. Woods & the Camp Cookie Review. At dark the Bandera County Christian Fellowship presents a Living Nativity. Then gather around the campfire & chuck wagon for hot chocolate, coffee and cookies. Bring your lawn chair.
