Few cities get to enjoy Carnival Season like New Orleans.  New Orleans hosted the Sugar Bowl, the National Championship game this year, now its Madri Gras, then its the NBA All Star game before getting a break for New Orleans Jazz Fest. They have a great line up this year including Stevie Wonder, Tim Mcgraw, Allison Krauss, Sheryl Crow, Jimmy Buffet, Billy Joel, Santana, Randy Newman, Randy Plant among others. Now for the Trivia?

1. What do Mardi, Lent and Easter have to do with each other.

2. What is a Krewe and the Krewe of Rex is special for what reason.

3. Harry Connick started which Krewe?

4. Name three throws you would like to catch?

5. What is a King cake, what is unedible in the cake and what does it mean?

These are all easy for the natives. people actually make careers out of Mardi Gras like Blaine Kern. Who is blaine Kern and you get a bonus question?

Eric - I believe Mardi is French for tuesday. The Mardi Gras festival ends on Fat Tuesday. The next day is Ash Wednesday which is the beginning of Lent. The period of Lent ends on Easter Sunday.

The term Krewe is used to designate Carnival participation organizations. The krewe of Rex is the King of the Carnival. They begin the celebration each year. The song they start their first parade with (If I ever cease to love) is now considered the Carnival anthem. The krewe colors, purple, green and gold are now the colors of Mardi Gras.

Harry Connick, Jr (son of the former Mayor) started the Krewe of Orpheus. No surprise it is a musical based Krewe.

Three throws that I have seen to be most popular are beads, candy and doubloons.

The King cake often has a trinket or plastic baby to represent the Christ Child.

Blaine Kern, why he builds floats, the most famous would be for Harry Connick, Jr's Krewe of Orpheus.

Man, I miss the party and I won't make it this year.

John, did you live here? You got most of them correct! I would say cups before candy. However you did great. Rex is the King of Carnival and parades on Mardi Gras day. The season ends with the toast and meeting of the courts of Rex and Comus at the Ball that nite where the tune is played. At midnite the celebration ends.

IT was on the eve of Shrove Tuesday in-the year 1699 that Iberville made his way in through the mouth of the Mis sissippi River. He was not unconscious of the date or of its significance. His journal shows that his thoughts, as he lay upon a mat of reeds and regarded familiar stars over a strange land, were of a gay... "

Eric - I had the good fortune to reside in the quarter in the late 60's for a period of time. I lived in a garage that had a rest room, used a hot plate to cook and painted like a mad man. I spent my days at Jackson Square selling what I could to the throngs of art starved tourist that came in droves. I studied with and worked alongside some of the finest artist in the country. I ate nahlin's food and drank my coffee wit chickory. I spent little time on Bourbon Street, much too crowded with out of towners. Much easier to stay away and let them feed the economy. Never marched with a Krewe but did walk the walk in several funerals.

Anyone that has lived there through the seasons, may move on but the crescent city will own their heart forever.

John, I guess you can say we may be a little different than many places. The counter trend runs pretty strong in these parts and its not just in the Quarter.
