What if I told you there is a totally free way to change someone's mood? Just SMILE. Research has shown that we can effect enormous positive changes in our lives and in the lives of others using a tool we have with us all the time - our smile.
Changing others outlook or reaction can be done through a fascinating process called mimicry. Research conducted in Sweden exposed participants to images of faces while they monitored their facial muscles through electromyographs, otherwise known as EMGs. When exposed to happy faces, participants engaged their zygomatic major muscle - muscles used in smiling. In turn, when exposed to sad faces participants moved their corrugator supercilii muscle which are used in frowning. So don't be a GRINCH. When you smile at someone else most likely their zygomatic muscle will begin forming a smile too.
Did you also know if you mimic a smile by lifting the creases of your lips and squinting your eyes, your body will release serotonin, dopamine and other “feel-good” indicators? Okay, enough of the scientific stuff about smiling. How does it relate to real estate? 
As a Louisville KY real estate agent for Keller Williams I can tell you smiling is so important in our industry. Buying and selling a home is one of the most emotional experiences in folks lives. There are times when working with those not-so-pleasant people makes me want to scream but I've found if I flash my pearly-whites it definitely changes my mood along with theirs.
I mean just look at me - wouldn't you smile at me? LOL!!!
I've noticed in our office those who smile and look pleasant more regularly are those associates I gravitate toward and want to work with. They are also the most successful. Homebuying is an exciting time in your life so who wants to work with a negative, crabby, unhappy realtor???
As quoted by Will Ferrel as ELF, one of my all-time favorite holiday characters, "I just like to smile. Smiling's my favorite."
Practice more smiling especially during the holiday season. So what if someone cut in front of you in the Target checkout line . . . Take comfort in knowing you are a smiling, happy person and that guy is probably getting a "lump of coal" from Santa!!!
