Winterize outdoor pipes

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 New Millennium

It's been a mild winter so far in PG County, MD  but as the temperatures are getting steadily colder it's important to remember to winterize outdoor pipes.  A few simple steps will prevent your pipes from freezing and potentially causing major damage and expense.

Winterize outdoor pipes:

Step 1:  Turn off the water to the outdoor pipes

Step 2:  Open the outdoor faucet to allow any water in the line to run off

Step 3:  Leave the faucet open until the Spring when the temperatures are consistently above freezing

Step 4:  If desired, insulation can be added to the outdoor pipes.

In addition to the steps necessary to winterize outdoor pipes don't forget to always leave the heat on at a minimum level even when you are away from home to minimize the chances of the indoor pipes freezing.

Simple steps taken to protect your home will ensure that your home survives winter with no damage.

Good recommendations for making sure your pipe are safe during the winter months.  It also is a good idea to shut off the water if you are going to be gone for a period of time.

Growing up my mom's pipes froze many times, but never burst. I have learned through the years that if your sinks are enclosed in cabinets it helps to open cabinet doors so the heat can get through to the pipes. Happy Holidays Stacey!

Dr. Stacey-Ann, This is such an important thing to do. As a native Californian winterizing pipes in the area I live was not an issue until about 20 years ago when it got so cold pipes did freeze. Homeowners definitely want to ensure that does not happen with a little preventative maintenance.
