How are stagers finding clients in this tough market?

I am a home stager based in Brighton, Michigan and the local home market is awful.  Foreclosures outnumber the actual sellers it seems and I am afraid it will get worse before it gets better.  I have been in Real Estate since 2005 and started my staging business in 2006.  I have a lot of agent contacts here in town but have been unable to generate any business from them.  I was wondering how other local stagers are marketing their services?  I have tried all kinds of ways and have been unsuccessful.  I would appreciate any tips you might be willing to share with me. Thanks.

Christine:  I know where Brighton MI is.  The company my husband works for use to be in Brighton until the plant burned down.  They are now in Fowlerville.

I'm located in Spring Hill, Florida and the staging business has not caught on.  My business partner and I went to Barb Schwarz's home staging course in Tampa and decided to do the extra day for a whole lot of money and we would eventually move from real estate to staging!  Didn't happen.  People here do not want to pay the fee for a consultation.  So now we offer it as a service.  That's ok.  We don't have time for both so we use what we have learned to enhance our real estate market.

Good luck its tough in Michigan.  I have a friend in real estate who is really having a tough time.  I hope things get better for you.

Hi Christine,

I just happened across your blog. It's a couple of months later but I feel your pain! I have been at this for 3 years and am struggling more than when I first started out. The market is in the toilet! I dedicate one day a week to calling agencies and it takes aproximately 7 "No thank yous" before I get one yes to do a presentation. Even after the presentation, I am not assured that the agents will hire me.  All I can say is if you are serious about wanting to stage, hang in there!
