I dedicate this to all the brave police officers in our family...
By now nearly everyone has seen, or heard the story of police officer Mike Hill, from Jennings, La. If you haven’t heard this wonderful story, I would like to continue to spread the good news of one of God’s better angels.
Here it goes…
Blaize Richard’s life-long dream has been to become a police officer, according to his mother, Angie Richard. Unfortunately, Blaize is mentally disabled and autistic. For his 18th birthday, his mother set up a visit for Blaize to the Jenning’s police department, where he was given his own police uniform.
As happens many times, the goodness of our humanity causes us to go above and beyond in our treatment of others…and that is the case in this situation. When the news of Blaize’s dream to become a police officer spread through the department, the better angel within Officer Mike Hill took over. Officer Hill visited Blaize several weeks later to show him his new squad car. Officer Hill has visited enough that Blaize’s mom commented, "He calls Blaize his back-up. He just comes and checks on him. It really makes Blaize's day. I think Mike enjoys it just as much as Blaize does."
I am reminded of the song, He Ain’t Heavy…He’s My Brother, written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. The Hollies recorded the song in 1969, but many will remember Neil Diamond’s version; which was recorded in 1970.
The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
So on we go
What makes this story so special is; Hill’s boss and Jenning’s police chief, Todd D'Albor, said that Hill has tried to deflect the attention he has received since the story went viral. D’Ablor commented that Hill is,“ kind of overwhelmed," The chief further added, "Police officers sometimes get a bad rap for the things that go wrong, but people don't generally see that they [police officers] do have compassionate hearts and they do care about making a difference, and Mike Hill exemplifies that."
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
In just a few days, police chief D'Albor plans to commission Blaize as an honorary police officer. "My police officers embrace what it's about, which is to serve the community, not just protect it," D'Albor said. "When you touch a life, that's what it's all about."
If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy he's my brother
