How I Started a Business Networking International (BNI) "Core" Group in My Local Area?

By
Real Estate Agent with Samson Properties DC#: SP98357714

BNI stands for Business Networking International.  What is BNI?

The World's Largest Referral Organization

BNI is the largest business networking organization in the world. We offer members the opportunity to share ideas, contacts and most importantly, business referrals.

BNI allows only one profession per chapter.  Thus, my profession as a Real Estate Agent was and is filled in ALL of the Chapters in my local area; therefore, I CONQUERED MY FEAR and decided to start a BNI chapter in my local area.  How did I do this?

1.  I was introduced, initially, to BNI about 3 years ago; however, at the time, I did not feel that my list of approved vendors was suitable.  Thus, I decided, although not necessary to start a BNI, to WAIT until my list was to my satisfaction.

2.  Then, in the Fall of 2007, I decided that it was time for me to do SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

3.  I called the loan officer who initially invited me to BNI, and he gave me the phone number of one of the area directors to call.  He also gave me the BNI website.

4.  I called EVERY LOCAL Area Director until someone called me, and I received the proper contact person for my area.

5.  Had a phone conference with this Director for ideas.  She decided that since another group was also starting that we would have a BNI General Overview Meeting.  I was encouraged to invite everyone to this meeting who I wanted to be a part of my BNI Chapter.

6.  I also reviewed ALL of the websites for the CHAPTERS that are in my area.  This gave me insight regarding the BNI weekly meeting . . . its format . . . and what is basically required.

7.  From there, I formulated a letter and e-mailed it out to ALL of my business contacts.  I invited them to this BNI General Overview Meeting.  I invited approximately 55+ professions.

8.  What was the Result:  Eleven (11) out of the 55+ that I invited showed up.  Which professions were in attendance among my invitees?

Home Inspector, Real Estate Attorney, Reverse Mortgage Specialist, Appraiser, Tile Installer, Title / Escrow, Me (Realtor), Another Title / Escrow, Termite Inspector, Web Designer, Travel Agent.  YOU MAY FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE BUT NO LOAN OFFICER THAT I INVITED SHOWED UP!!!  Out of the two "starting" chapters that were present, I was happy to note that out of the 16 that were present, to include the Director and the Ambassador, I had 11 that were in attendance . . . this was awesome!!!

9.  The following week when we met for our first initial meeting with our Core Group, we had about 10 to 15 that showed up.  This was in November 2007.

What is happening now?

We now have seven (7) professions who have signed up.  What professions are they?

Title/Escrow (Also a Real Estate Attorney), Reverse Mortgage Specialist, Loan Officer, Residential Real Estate (ME), Banker, Property/Casualty/Auto Insurance, Financial Planner (Also does Life Insurance and Disability).

If you are in the Largo / Upper Marlboro area OR in Washington, DC and want to join a BNI group, THE FOLLOWING ARE THE PROFESSIONS THAT OUR GROUP IS LOOKING FOR:

So, if your area BNI group has your profession filled, take the plunge and BREAK THROUGH YOUR FEAR . . . START A BNI CHAPTER . . . BNI Local Area Directors and Ambassadors will help you!!!

Hello Uniqca:

I know the frustration of not being able to get into my local groups, because my profession has a representative and there is a ton waiting to take that person place if they leave. I have been toying with the idea of starting my own networking group. I thank you for giving a working model to use.  I think that networking is a very positive way to make in roads to staying afloat in this industry. I notice that you did not include any hairdresser's, in my past I have come to know that these individuals have valuable info, usually they find out when someone is interested in selling or buying before they actually start lookingb. A bankruptcy attorney would be an asset also.

I would like to stay in touch.

Lorraine,

What a fabulous idea!!!  You have my mind jogging . . . I took your suggestion and added a Bankruptcy Attorney, Hair Dresser, Barber, Manicurist, Pedicurist, and a Probate Attorney.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Also, you can do it.  BNI will help you as you start a BNI Chapter in your area.  You will NOT be alone.  Then, as other members join, they are of GREAT assistance, as well.

I tell you . . . I have met so-o-o many different professions that I would NOT have met had I not started this group.  They are the ARM to my real estate business.  In other words, the services that I do not directly provide, I have someone whom I network with, weekly, who does.  It makes me a GREAT source of information for my clients.

You can do it!!!

By the way, did you join the Active Rain group, called:  "I Want to Be in BNI"?  There will be more tips and suggestions on starting a BNI group.  Come join us if you have not, already!!!

Hi Charity,

Thanks for your positive words.

I hope that it will work, too.  I am feeling very confident that we will become a Chapter since I truly believe that what I put in it . . . I will get out of it.  Thus, if I put forth the necessary effort, along with the other members, I am confident that it will work out.

Nevertheless, I will keep you posted via this sight.  Thanks for the voice of hope!!!

Hey Uniqca. What's going on? I see you have left Washington,DC to join Maryland. I am glad that I read this post. I also wanted to join a BNI Group around 2006 or early 2007. After reading your post,I might start mine too who's know. And I see you have a meetup group on www.meetup.com - You go woman. Someone on here introduced me to that site. I told some agents about it but they didnt take me serious -Oh well. Also, how about adding Financial planners,Wedding Planners- ( We know that some people who get married always want to buy a house),Project Manager,Nutritionist,Gym trainer,Dentist,Doctor,Nurse,Restaurant Owner,Chef. That's just me. Anyway,I will probably see you sometime hopefully soon. I haven't been there in a while. Much luck with the BNI Group. I will let you know if I did go through with either joining or forming one. Take care.

Hi Lanre,

I am very much active in DC and in MD.  However, since I am licensed in both, I endeavor to keep myself covered in both areas.  In fact, I just closed on a condo in 8 days in DC (Fairfax Village).  DC is home.

Also, thank you for your commendation regarding my efforts in BNI.  It is moving along quite well.  We are having a VISITORS DAY on next week, that is -- Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 11:30am to 1:00pm.  ADDRESS IS:  9701 Apollo Drive, Suite 441 (4th Floor) in Largo, MD  20774.  Meeting Fee is $15.00.  We are anticipating upwards of 30 to 50 people in attendance.

Thus, if you know of a Financial Planner, Wedding Planner, Project Manager, Dentist, Doctor, Nurse, Caterer, CPA, Bookkeeper, Estate Planning Attorney, Home Stager, please feel free to contact them, then forward their contact information to me with their prior permission.  I would love to have them there.

Good for you and I'm glad you decided to join accountability central, it sure looks like you have a lot to offer the group. Is this group everywhere or is it just in Maryland? I would love to start something like that here.

Hi Uniqca,

I was invited to attend one last week on Basil Court in Largo but I could not make it. Could it be the same one? They said they were looking for Commercial lender.

Thanks

Uniqca -  I applaud you big time.. I have been told BNI is the best however every single group i checked into had a loan officer already....   i know it's probably too late, but i live 5 minutes from Upper Marlboro, have 15 years lending experience, own my company and would love to get involved. If you have no room but are contacted by someone looking to start a new group that wants a high quality mortgage pro, pleaseeee pass my name along.

best of luck with your encounter. I am jealous of what you have done already on your own!

Hi Uniqca,

Are you all still going strong?  I've worked with Nancy G before, she's great; and I didn't even know she was in BNI.  My group is in Alexandria, but if you're still moving, I'll have to get to Upper Marlboro for some cross chapter work.

If someone sees you as a founding member of the chapter, that's got to give you even more enhanced credibility.
