Located in southeastern Union County is the City of Rahway. Rahway is a city that is in the midst of a renaissance and has had several revitalization projects in recent years.
But Rahway is also rich in local history. During the Revolutionary War the Battle of Spanktown took place in Rahway with the American troops killing more than 100 British soldiers. The settlement of Spanktown later changed its name to Rahway.
George Washington stopped at Rahway's Merchants and Drover's Tavern on the way to his innauguation in New York City in 1789. The tavern still stands today on the corner of Saint George's Avenue and Westfield Avenue.
Diagonally across from the tavern is a memorial park honoring several of Rahway's veterans of m
any wars.
After the Revolutionary War, Rahway was the home to the nation's first mint, that made coins with the inscription: "E Pluribus Unum" which mean's together we are one.
Rahway was also home to the Wheatina facotory in the late 1800's and today is home to the corporate headquarters of Merck, one of the largest pharmecuetical companies in the world.
The city also has several ties to the sicences. It was home to Nikolai Tesla's Tesla Light and Manufacturing Company. Although Rahway High School's most notable graduate is the late Astronomer, Carl Sagan.
