My son several months ago made a comment about someone, and I came back with that I thought it was an unfair comment to make. My son shot back, “You know, you are always looking for the good in other people…so much so that it blinds you to what that person is really like!”
I thought for a moment, and came back with, “Is there really any other way to live?”
Perhaps I do live with my rose-colored glasses perched upon my nose…but I would rather live that way than to think that everyone is waiting to take advantage of me. I refuse to live cynically…thinking the worst of everyone. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am not a rube, or a country bumpkin, just waiting to be taken advantage of. I really think the vast majority of my fellow citizens are just like me, and are willing to give those we encounter the benefit of the doubt, until the person’s actions dictate otherwise.
With that mindset, a month or so ago, I decided to seek out those stories that I thought proved my point…that there is goodness all around us. As a society, I think it is really unhealthy to focus on the negative around us because I think evil rubs off. If you feel that the “other guy” is out to get you…it isn’t too long before you are out to get him, before he gets you.
If you believe in the ultimate goodness of those around you, then you hold yourself to a higher standard. You feel that you have to hold up your side of the bargain. Doing good generates more good things being done.
So began my blogging journey to seek out the good, and share it with anyone willing to take the time to read it. Looking for the good in the newspaper, on television, and on the Internet has proven to be most rewarding. We are a great country, and the vast majority of us are wonderful people.
I saw this story yesterday on CBS Sunday News Program. Perhaps you saw it too. If you didn’t ,please take a minute to watch this incredible story…it will change your perspective…it really will! There are heroes galore…or as I like to call them, our better angel. Being good and decent is a choice we make every day. I’d like to leave you with this. I am sorry; I do not know the author to give him/her proper credit…
The Story of the Two Wolves
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, 'My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.' The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: 'Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
