Enjoying The Birds of Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina

The mountains of Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina have a beautiful array of native birds and, I am happy to say, many call our yard their home.  While I hate to admit I could waste hours just sitting and watching their antics, you will find numerous feeders around the yard and hanging from the porches and decks.

Jump

We have lots of Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chicadee and White-Breasted Nuthatch year-round.  Recently the feeders have been overwhelmed with the arrival of the Cassin’s Finch, American Goldfinch  and House Finch.  We have several very shy Red-Bellied Woodpeckers and Downy Woodpeckers as well as Cardinals and an occasional Eastern Bluebird.  We put corn out for the deer in the back yard and have attracted quite a flock of Blue Jays!

Mr. Cardinal

Last year this little lady, an Eastern Phoebe, visited us, built a nest in the support beams to our upstairs deck and hatched three little babies.  She was spotted this morning with straw in her beak headed for the deck!

The french doors from our home office open to a covered porch where two feeders currently provide me with lots of distractions entertainment.  With the snow of last night and this morning, the feeders have been very busy and I couldn’t resist taking a few shots to share.

This next shot was from a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes you really get lucky!!

Great view. I'd be distracted too. I really enjoy watching birds at the feeder. You have quite a selection. And wow, snow in March. I can't ever remember that happening here in the Seattle area. I wouldn't have guessed your area would have gotten snow either. Is this normail? (I picture Georgia/North Carolina as a lot warmer) :)

Debi - Thank you I totally love watching the little guys and was very excited when our Phoebe returned this morning.

We are far western NC/Northeast GA in the mountains so we have a VERY mild summer and winter BUT we do get snow.  On average about 10 inches per season.  Today we got about 4 inches here however, the nice part is,  it will all be gone by tomorrow!!!

Hi Bill and Cyndi,

Great post of bird species in your area and I love the photos. I have never seen a cardinal in real life but have had blue jays a few times getting aggressive and running off the other birds. They must really like your porch with all those sunflower seeds.

Kristin -

The cardinals are one of my favs!!  One of the character traits of the Blue Jays is that they are aggressive and will gang up on squirrels, cats, etc.

Black oil sunflower seeds are the preferred food in the area.  They eat A LOT!!

Hey Cyndi, how cool to get the photo of the bird just as it takes off in flight.  Not so cool is the bird in the same photo giving the "scold" to the one taking off.  Great pictures.
