So I literally wear several hats on a daily basis, sometimes running into the house, changing from Construction clothes to Real estate suits, back to construction clothes in a typical day.
About a week or so ago, I drove home in the pouring rain, ran in the house, leaving my 8th cell phone since Katrina in the truck so it wouldn't get wet again.
Once in the house, I thought I had disabled my burgular alarm, and ran up the stairs to change..as I was literally running late for an open house.
3 minutes, 30 seconds from entering my house, I hear the front door downstairs open, and a little thump. WIth the rain storming, and hearing the thump, I barely have my pants on, and I run downstairs to find out how my front door opened.
As I got to the bottom of the stairs, I heard two women say, "FREEZE, PUT your HANDS UP!", then a couple clicks. Needless to say, my pants dropped as my hands went up, and I was never so scared since almost falling off a cliff in the Amazon.
So here I was, in my own house, getting arrested 3.5 minutes after my alarm did not reset itself. Once these young ladies figured out I lived in the house, and let me sit down as I recovered from my chest pains and instant sweating, I wanted to kiss them!
So the next time someone tells you about crime in New Orleans, and police eating donuts in our city, remember this true story...and 3.5 minute response time to a possible break in. With a Police response like this, and the following Police backup, I feel so much safer everyday...in less than the time spent waiting for a cup of coffee, I had people that cared ready and willing to do what it takes to protect my home and me.
How I love the new New Orleans.
