About every five years, Texas Monthly decides that it's time to stir the pot.  To achieve this end, they send tasters far and wide across the Great State of Texas in search of the very best BBQ the State has to offer . . . in THEIR opinion.

Then, they print this opinion.  Teasing the tiger, we call it.  Check it out - and don't miss the map at the bottom, it could come in very handy if you should be inclined to go on a state-wide BBQ road trip!

Immediately, one of the favorite occupations here in Texas, "discussing" where the very best in brisket, sausage, ribs (and whether pork or beef ribs are the best or, for that matter, even Truly Texan) is to be found begins.  This is one of our native sports, and we all consider ourselves to be very good at it.  It immediately becomes obvious that the Texas Monthly Tasters didn't know what they were talking about - or they were spot on.  That they missed the very best BBQ in the state in favor of lesser offerings - or that everything on their list is the best to be had.

I especially enjoy this because, while I have my favorites (City Market in Luling, for one, and a couple of others I'm not sharing with the whole internet, or even Texas Monthly, because I don't want to stand in line forever), this is always an opportunity to find places I haven't tried.  Not in the list of 50, though.  The true gems are found, by those who are patient and persistent and pay attention, in the comments.  I've already made reservations for the Central Texas Foodies Meetup at a couple that I found that way - looking forward to BBQ nirvana!

Where's your favorite Texas BBQ?  Like I said, I'm always looking for a new BBQ experience!
