It is my personal opinion that everyone on this planet should give back in SOME WAY. Just find something that touches you personally and go for it.
For me, that "thing" is animals. It is alarming to me how profoundly we as humans negatively affect so many other species living on this planet that we ALL call home. I am convinced from my work in rescue that animals most definately have feelings and souls.
Since coming to Florida, I decided to get involved in a cause that would not allow me to bring animals home (like I did with dogs). The Sea Turtle Preservation Society is committed to the Preservation of the sea turtles of all kinds, but specifically the three Species types that nest on Brevard County Beaches. We do this in a number of ways, but education is a huge part of what we do.
Last night as we were preparing for our Saturday evening Powerpoint presentation at Spressard Holland Beach Park, a baby Loggerhead Hatchling that had been found was released by into the Atlantic ocean. I don't know if this little one was a boy or girl. Realistically, it really didn't matter. I was struck, however, at the absolute beauty of this tiny sea turtle. Looking at it, it almost looked to be velveteen on it's shell. As it was brought closer to the oceans edge, he/she could smell it was closer to home or SOMETHING and got more active in the container it was in. It wanted OUT!
This baby miracle that was barely a couple of inches long, has less than a 1% chance of making it to sexual maturity and returning to Melbourne Beach, Florida to reproduce.
As he/she swam out to sea to reach the sargassum that is so necessary for him or her to grow up big and strong, I said a prayer and then good-bye.
Hope to see you back in 25 years dear baby!
