Have you done anything healthy for yourself today? Take 2
You may have seen my blog post Have you done anything healthy for yourself today? where I challenged you to try a smoothie made of kale. Some were a little hesitant to drink a green vegetable so I’m trying another, more gentle approach by challenging you to try a Fruit Smoothie.
This is my go-to recipe but you can substitute just about any of the ingredients.
FRUIT SMOOTHIE
¾ cup skim milk
¾ cup orange juice
1/3 cup Greek vanilla yogurt
1 banana
6 or so med to large strawberries
Handful of blueberries
2 heaping TB ground flax seed
Handful of ice
Put ingredients in blender in order shown and blend for 20-30 seconds until smooth. This will produce 4 cups of a thick drink.
Suggested substitutions: soy milk for skim; another fruit juice for oj; pineapple, mango, raspberries, blackberries, in addition to or instead of berries listed.
Suggested additions: add a scoop of whey protein; add cooled, pre-made oatmeal (1/2 cup oatmeal to 1 cup water; microwave for 1 min 45 sec). If adding oatmeal, increase each liquid to 1 cup.
Tips: fruit can be fresh or frozen. If my fresh fruit won’t last another day, I’ll peel and cut up bananas and/or trim and cut up other fruit and freeze all until I’m ready to make a smoothie. If I have smoothie leftovers I freeze in single serving plastic cups and semi-defrost when ready to drink.
Be healthy!
