The annual Pet Parade in Olympia is a favorite community tradition, and this coming Saturday, August 17th is when this year's event will be happening.
Kids can bring their cats, dogs, rabbits, ponies, mice, gerbils - whatever pet they have that can parade down the street with them, or be pulled in a wagon or carried along. Many of the pets will be in costume (and you know how much cats LOVE to be dressed up!). And many of the kids will also have decorated a bike, trike, wagon or even a mini float.
And did I mention that the kids can be in costume, too? There are all kinds of categories that will be judged for prizes to be awarded to add a little extra excitement to the day. Lineup begins at 8 AM at Heritage Park, and judging will be from 8:30 - 9:45. Then the parade starts at 10 AM, and parents are welcome to "parade" right along with their kids.
The parade ends up at Sylvester Park and all the kids will get free ice cream and goodie bags - and maybe win one of the prizes, which include cash, gift certificates, movie or game passes.
The Pet Parade has been entertaining the parade participants and those lining the streets to watch for 84 years, so this year is bound to include some kids whose grandparents once made their way down the streets of Olympia in the Pet Parade! What a great summer tradition! (And no registration is necessary - just show up!)
