Are all agents this bad?

Forgive my rant but I just hate it when other agents make ME look bad!  I had a client inquire about a property in another state.  Without access to their local MLS I was not able to answer some of the questions from the client.  As any agent would, I thought I would contact the listing agent.  I went to the broker's web site and much to my surprise the site did not list the listing agents.  Weird, I thought to myself.  I called the broker's office and in the middle of the day on a Thursday got a message the office was closed!  Even more weird I thought.  I left a VM for the owner to call me since I was not sure who was the listing agent thinking I would hear back within a few hours.

I did a bit more research and found the listing agent of the property on another site.  I called her direct number and got her voice mail.  Again, leaving a message I thought a response within a few hours would occur.  (By the way, the property is over listed at over $280,000 - not super large but not small either.)  I also plucked out an email to the listing agent asking for a few basics on the property.  24 hours pass without even so much as a peep.

I'm shocked!  I had to call the listing agent a second time and beg via voice mail for her to respond to me so that I in turn could get back to my client.  She never did call me back but sent me an email with some of the information I asked for along with, "the builder this and the builder that" about the property.  As though I care.

What I care about is getting back to my client who now thinks I'm a complete and total moron because I can't answer simple questions about taxes, HOA fees etc.  Don't even get me started on how I feel about how the listing agent has not done her job for her client.  A builder is actually paying this agent to "sell" her house and she can't even return a phone call to a potential buyer.  What kind of dis-service has this agent done?  No wonder people think real estate agents are over paid.  You think in good conscience I can recommend this agent to my client?  Not a chance.  Since it is an out-of-state transaction this agent could have potentially had both sides of the transaction - but not now.

I agree.  I have always kept in contact with my referrals and have been on the other end too, where you send the paperwork, but never hear from them.

Hi Tony. It's like any other profession, some people do their job better than others, and it reflects poorly on all of us.

Hey Tony, here is a good one: had a referral from out of state to show a log cabin not so easy to get to time away from the office to show it but it was my client/seller's home so you do what you have to. Turns out the so called buyer was looking at the builder of the home for his own location, and wanted to see how they look when they were done. Its a good thing I get paid to be a tour guide - oh wait!!, no I don't my mistake.

This lack of professionalism is uncalled for in our profession. We sometimes wonder why the public thinks we are right up there with used car salesman and insurance agents. This is why. A few make it look bad for the rest of us.

Tony,

I have found that some agents don't give out their cell number..I don't know about you..but mine is on from 9-9...perhaps on vibrate when I'm with clients..but nonetheless I can see who is calling.

It amazes me how some people call them selves professionals when if they worked at a dollar store they would get fired for not doing their job.

Great post.

Tony, its very good that you hold yourself to high standards of practice.  It will pay of for you in the future.  I am often surprised how some stay in business.
