This Wide Angle is Wicked (and that's a good thing)

By
Home Stager

There has been a whole lot of discussion on AR about wide angle cameras and/or lenses and the advantage they give you when shooting real estate photos.  After looking at all of the wide angle camera shots, I was convinced that I was not giving my agents the best photos I could....well, I was with the camera I had, but I didn't think they were good enough.

Anyway, I started researching cameras and even though there have been many positive reviews for the Kodak v705, I quickly found that this camera has been discontinued (why??) and though you can find them, you will definitely pay a pretty penny for them.  Onward with my search...

I am a big fan of Canon cameras, so I decided to search in that realm.  What I found was the Canon SD870 IS.

Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)(photo courtesy of amazon.com)

I hesitated in ordering it, because I recently bought a new laptop and didn't want to make another technology investment so soon.  However, I realized that the family camera needed to be flat out replaced and it would be better to retire my perfectly good (and perfect for personal photos) Canon A95 to them and purchase a new one for the business.

It arrived Saturday and I took my first property photos with it today.  I cannot tell you how impressed I am with this camera.  I will just have to show you.

This is a shot taken with the A95:                                       This is the same shot taken with the SD870:

The difference is just astonishing to me.  You can see so much more of the room and not just in width, but all directions. I had read some reviews that stated they felt the flash too weak, but in truth I think the flash on the A95 was too bright, so it makes no difference to me.  The RE agent for this property followed me around while I took the shots and is so impressed by the difference in the shots she may buy one herself.

Other nice features about this camera, though not critical for RE shoots... It shoots in macro for extreme close up. (Here are some I did while playing with it yesterday. Obviously not my best work, but I am still learning how things work.)

   Fake iris...

And Black and white:

And most awesomely... color isolation mode:

I may never buy art photography ever again!

Now that I have a wide angle, I will never shoot properties with anything else.

Kimberly, Wide-angle lenses are great.  I use a Kodak V570 myself.  You may want to look into using Photomatix software to bring out the intensity of colors and extend the range of tones of your photography.

I'm just beginning to play with the combination of the two.  The Photomatix software combines three images with different exposures so that you end up with a photo of incredible richness and depth.  If you add the wide-angle lense, the results are pretty sensational for showing up your staging work.

Here's a photo I took today of my dining area...

Kimberly...Thank you for sharing your good fortune with the rest of us.  I am always on the look out for another camera.

I just bought a Panasonic FZ18 last month.  I'm very pleased with it but am thinking of getting one that is smaller.  I have a Fuji FinePix F10.  It has served me well but it does not have a wide angle.  I cannot imagine taking pictures without one now that I have. I'll have to check out the zoom on Canon SD870 as the FZ18 is 18x and I like it.

Great photos.  You should be pleased.  Good purchase and it looks like you have helped out a few people including me (possibly).

Thanks,

Kathleen

Kathleen - This camera has a 3.8x zoom.  Limited, I know, but when I need more zoom I will use the A95 - it has a 12x zoom.  I guess it depends on what you are shooting.  If you need something real close up, the macro feature is the way to go.   Good luck!

Kimberly...I spent way too much time last night looking at cameras.  I like the one you bought and the Panasonic FX55K which is only $219.95 (amazon.com) and looks pretty good.

As I really don't need one I should resist.

Kathleen - Resistance is futile... you will buy the camera.... Oops!  Did I just type that?  I actually found this camera on a site called Techon  digital for $249.  Doesn't that figure?

Kimberly, well it happened and again it's watch out what you wish for.  While at the top of the continental divide (Montana/Idaho) on snowmobiles my camera went white on me and we were not in a white out.  So now I'm on the hunt, for real.  Still happy with your Canon?  Does is do panoramics with stitching like the Kodak?  Not that I need that but it's a neat feature for family travel shots.  Sending my husband out on the hunt tonight.

Thanks,

Ginger

With that wide angle you will do well. I Take professional photos with an expensive SLR and a wide angle lense.

With a flash that lights up any room. You would be surprised with the difference.

Ginger - I am stil happy with it, as a matter of fact.  It has internal stitching for panoramics.  I haven't used it, though. Sory to hear about your camera. :(

Paul - I am very pleased with the difference it makes.  My agents are happy as well.

Kimberly, got my camera today, the Canon SD870 IS and I've just barely given it a try, but I have to tell you thanks again for sharing it with us.  It certainly IS wide angle, especially when compared to my Kodak.  When I get accustomed to it I know that I will love it.  I understand that there's a Super Flash available for it...do you have it?

Ginger - I did not know about the super flash, but it is something I will definitely look into. It is true that the flash is a little weak, so that would be a great upgrade.  Thanks for letting me know!

Julianna - You are welcome!

Hey Kim, just started looking through some of my return visit photos using my new Canon and had to share the difference...people gotta know about this.  I'm really happy!  Still have a lot to learn and it's small size it awkward for my old eyes and dumb fingers, but I love the difference in this shot.

I really was standing in exactly the same place.  First one is from my kodak with a 36mm lense and the second with your and my canon.  WOW what a difference.  I know that everybody raves about their kodak v705, but they have to see what another wide angle camera can do.

not wide anglewide angle

Now I need to learn how to adjust for my "inventory and placement" shots that are not meant for publication, just for my eyes only and they need to be closer.

Thanks again for posting about this gem!

Great info.  At HABITEC Home and Building Inspections, LLC, we have been using the Panasonic Lumix (Different Models) with modest results.  Basically the camera is too fragile for Home Inspections and must be looked at as a disposable with a one year life expectancy.  Customer Service also gets mixed reviews as there is a lot of confusion there about their own policies and their ability to follow through on what they say they will do and what they actually do is not very good.  At one point their rep suggested that the "Lumix is a great camera if you don't use it too much"!  We're shopping and I'll look into the Canon.

Roland - I would encourage you to blog about that camera and tell us all why you love it.  As you can see, people are looking for this kind of information!

Ginger - Yeah!! I am so glad you like the camera!  You are right, it is small and that has been an adjustment for me as well.  My other camera is not huge, but I was very accustomed to it.

Barbara - You are very welcome!

Richard - OMG!!! 'It's great if you don't use it'!!  That is the worst statement you could ever hear from a  company rep! I haven't had this one long enough to attest to its durability, but I do love the width of the shots.  Good luck finding a camera that will hold up for you.

Kimberly,
I invested in a Panasonic Lumix not too long ago and it made a dramatic difference in my photos. Definitely worth every penny spent.
