What is it with a little snow?

It amazes me what happens when a little snow falls.  I live in Cincinnati and every time we get a little snow the who City shuts down.  Last night it started snowing about 3:30pm.  There was about an inch of snow by 5:30.  Based on the traffic, the 2+ hour commutes that normally take 20 minutes and people rushing to the grocery to empty the shelves of milk and bread you would have thought we were in for 2+ FEET.  Granted, the snow was followed by about 1/2" or so of freezing rain, but that did not start until later in the evening.

Schools closed early yesterday in anticipation of the snowfall.  WHAT!  I remember when I was a kid schools never closed because of snow.  Well, maybe they did, but we had to have like 6" or more before they closed.  That was back in the 70's when front wheel drive cars didn't exist and there was not the proliferation of 4WD SUVs there is today.  What are all these gas-guzzling 4WD SUV owners doing in the snow anyway?  Driving their 'other' car.  My parents both had big rear-wheel drive cars and never missed work.  They slid their way through the snow to work no matter what.  All those (in Cincinnati) who have a 4WD SUV probably don't even know how to get the thing into 4WD let alone drive in the snow.

If you are afraid to drive in the snow, here is a little advice...STAY HOME!!!  Don't drive 15 MPH just because you are afraid you car will slide.  Of course it will, the roads are slippery!  DUH!  I (obviously) have no patience for people who try to get out in the snow and drive when they are better off staying home and eating moldy bread and drinking sour milk.  Sorry, you should have thought about that yesterday.

I stay off the roads as much as possible when it snow not because I don't like driving in the snow, I actually enjoy it.  No, I stay off the roads because what is normally a 15 trip quickly turns into over 2 hours because of all the 15mph people who shouldn't be out in the first place.
