West Jordan Homes, New or Used, Help The Counties Heartbeat

West Jordan homes, new homes or used homes are the real heartbeat of the city. Actually, any home, in any city is what drives the engines that creates the quality of life weve come to expect. Before you decide I'm off my rocker, let me admit, that I know it's not really the house, it's the property taxes that house generates that fuels those engines. I'll also admit that it's not just the city, but the county as well, that relies on that money, and depends on the concept of taxing homes to provide all of the services we take for granted.

Last week, Mayor David Newton wrote a great article that everyone should read. The article appeared in the West Jordan City Newsletter. It was titled  Property Tax 101, and it was written to let the folks of West Jordan know where their tax dollars were going. Who got em, and where they were spent. Its worth your time to understand how things work.

I thought I'd highlight for you some of the Mayor's thoughts.

West Jordan City doesn't get all the money. Your tax dollars are split up as follows.

          Jordan School Dist:     57%
          Salt Lake County:        21%
          West Jordan City:        16%
          Special Districts:           6%

Based on those percentages then, lets allocate to the various entities the tax bill of $1125.00 on my Vista Montana Condominium for last year.

          Jordan School Dist:     $641
          Salt Lake County:        $236
          West Jordan City:        $180
          Special Districts:          $ 68

So what we see here is that West Jordan only gets to keep $180 of the money generated by my Vista Montana Condo. Where does it go ? How much do they get ? Check out this chart.

          Police:                          25%     $45
          Public Wks:                   22%     $40
          General Funds:             18%     $32
          Fire:                              16%     $29
          Community Dev:             9%     $16
          Parks/Rec:                      6%     $11
          Interest on debt:             3%     $ 5

Now I can begin to see why my Condos and your house in West Jordan are so important. Just think of it, police protection 24/7, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. In my case, for $45 dollars a year. Fire and paramedics available on call 24 hours a day for $29 dollars for 365 days  ( thats not even eight cents a day). It's fantastic what home ownership can do.

Let me quote the Mayor as he put it all in perspective in his article. "Next time you receive your property tax bill, look at these percentages and think of the important services your West Jordan City provides-police and fire protection, streets maintenance, parks, water, sewer, street sweeping, and snow plowing. It really is a good deal".
